11.Pottery that Supported the Medieval Age (Nara Period – Muromachi Period)

更新日:2020年2月25日更新

During the Nara Period (8th century), the time in which the Three Okayama Provinces of Bizen, Bicchu and Mimasaka were established, Sue ware made in Setouchi City’s Oku and Kurashiki City’s Tamashima were taken into the capital as a partial tax from the Bizen and Bicchu Provinces.

Toward the end of the Heian Period, kilns were built in areas such as Bizen City’s Inbe, Kurashiki City’s Kameyama and Shoo Town’s Katsumada, which made way for the distinctive Bizen, Kameyama and Katsumada wares. Above all, Bizen ware produced an earthenware mortar that had a superior durability. Bizen ware’s sells network spread to all areas of Japan during the Muromachi Period, becoming a representative pottery of the Medieval Age, along with Tanba ware (Hyogo Prefecture), Echizen ware (Fukui Prefecture), Tokoname ware and Seto ware (Aichi Prefecture).
