8.Kibi Salt Making (Yayoi Period – Kofun Period)

更新日:2020年2月25日更新

From the middle of the Yayoi Period, salt making was done in the southern parts of Kibi by boiling sea water inside of earthenware. At first, salt making was practiced in the minor islands, and then it spread to the coasts when the Yayoi period was coming to an end. The hearths used for salt making have been found at Hyakken River Haraojima Site in Okayama City and Joto Site in Kurashiki City.

Kibi salt making declined after that, only to become popularized once again towards the end of the Kofun Period. Fragments of earthenware covered in heavy layers of salt can be found at Setouchi City and Tamano City’s beaches. However, perhaps due to the spread of iron and pots, salt making done with earthenware would disappear with the coming of the Nara Period.
