7.Kibiji’s Megalithic Tomb (Kofun Period)

更新日:2020年2月25日更新

Komorizuka Tomb in Soja City is a zenpo koenfun with a length of just over 100 meters and is the largest tomb in Kibi during the late stages of the Kofun Period. In the circular back part of the tomb is a corridor-style stone chamber made from piled monoliths. It boasts a total length of 19.4 meters, a scale that is prominent even amongst other tombs across the country. The house-shaped stone coffin in the chamber looks very similar to those of the Kinki Region, but it was actually made using limestone from Okayama’s Ibara City (known as Namigata stone), 20 kilometers away from the tomb. It seems that it was used as a special coffin for the chief who led as the backbone of Kibi.

Found in the chamber were vast amounts of Sue ware, kantotachi (an iron sword with a ring on the pommel), iron arrowheads, decorated horse harnesses, beads, earrings and other items, all of which are thought to be made during the latter half of the sixth century.
