1.The Dawn of Kibi (Paleolithic Period – Jomon Period)

更新日:2020年2月19日更新

During a time of continuous cold climate 30,000 years ago, hunters of beasts such as Naumann elephants and giant fallow deer frequently travelled from the spreading grassland that is now the Seto Inland Sea to the Chugoku Mountains (Onbara Site in Kagamino Town, Ojigatake Site in Kurashiki City).

However, about 10,000 years ago when seawater enters the inland with the coming of a warm climate, many shell mounds would be formed on the seashore by people who use Jomon Doki, an ancient Japanese pottery (Hikosaki Shell Mound in Okayama City, Tsugumo Shell Mound in Kasaoka City etc.).

About 4000 years ago, people expanded into the lowlands where the seawater retreated, living life by hunting and cultivating plants. Before long, such people incorporated rice cultivation into their daily lives, becoming the bearers of Yayoi culture.
