On February 24th, the one-year anniversary of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, displaced Ukrainian citizens living in Okayama Prefecture paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi to convey the voices of the people in Ukraine.

Governor Ibaragi said, “I did not want the first anniversary of the ongoing Russian invasion to come. The situation is still worrisome, and I would like to raise the level of our support for Ukraine.” Liliya Babiy said, “My greatest wish is for peace, and I am sincerely grateful for your support during the past year. This war will end one day. I want to create deep ties between Ukraine and Okayama that will continue even after the war is over.”

The 13th Location Japan Awards Ceremony was held on February 16th, and Okayama Prefecture was awarded the Grand Prix for the first time.

This award is given annually to the work and region that moved people and revitalized local tourism the most in that year. Okayama Prefecture was evaluated highly as the location for the movie “Tonbi”, as it greatly contributed to the film.

Governor Ibaragi, who was presented with the award certificate and trophy, expressed his joy, saying, “I would like to thank everyone involved in the production of the film as well as the local people who made it so exciting.”

On February 1st, Her Excellency Mrs. PHONGSAMOUTH Anlavan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The Ambassador said, “I am pleased that we were able to introduce Laos to companies in Okayama Prefecture at the recent Laos Business Seminar.” She went on to discuss future investment in Laos by companies in Okayama Prefecture.

The Governor expressed his hope that the relationship between Okayama Prefecture and Laos would continue to deepen in the future, and presented the Ambassador with a commemorative gift.

On January 27th, the seventh “Lively Talk With the Governor” of fiscal 2022 was held at the Funao Community Center in Kurashiki City.

Under the theme of “New Farmers Pioneering the Future of the Bicchu Region!”, six new farmers from outside the prefecture who had changed careers and moved to the Bicchu General Service Bureau’s area of jurisdiction, gathered for the session.

Following their self-introductions, the new farmers actively exchanged opinions on the appeal of the Bicchu area as they have experienced it after starting farming, initiatives needed to promote agriculture, and their outlook on the future.

On January 18th, the executive committee for the 74th National Arbor Day, which is to be held in the spring of 2024, held its sixth general meeting.

At the general meeting, proposals for the general plan were discussed and participants reported on topics such as the decision on the event original poster. The governor expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I want to make National Arbor Day a success throughout Okayama Prefecture.”

After the general meeting, an award ceremony was held for the event original poster, and the grand prize winner, NISHIYAMA Kokona, was presented with a wooden certificate of commendation.

On January 12th, Vice Governor Yokota presented 12 organizations with a letter of appreciation from the Governor for their response and implementation of disease control measures with regard to the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak that occurred from October to December 2022.

Vice Governor Yokota expressed his gratitude, saying, “We were able to complete disease control measures early thanks to your efforts, despite the urgent request. We hope to continue to maintain a flawless disease control response system without letting our guards down.”

2023 Okayama Prefecture Carcass Meat Fair Held      Updated on January 11, 2023

On January 11th, the 2023 Okayama Prefecture Carcass Meat Fair, an annual event held at the beginning of the year in which contestants compete to showcase Okayama wagyu beef with the best marbling, color, and luster, was held at the local meat wholesale market run by the prefecture.

Governor Ibaragi also attended the event to promote the market and call for increased local food production for local consumption. The governor shared words of encouragement with the producers and buyers, saying, “Okayama is now gaining momentum in various fields. I hope that you will help Okayama wagyu beef gain further momentum.”

Twenty-three soccer players from Okayama Gakugeikan High School Boys’ Soccer Team visited the Prefectural Government Office to report their victory in the 101st All Japan High School Soccer Tournament.

Coach TAKAHARA Yoshiaki said, “Thanks to the support we got from everyone here in Okayama Prefecture, we were able to come out on top of 3,883 schools.” Also expressing his joy at winning the championship, team captain INOUE Tsukasa said, “The messages of support from many people, as well as the governor, gave us strength.”

Governor Ibaragi congratulated the students and presented them with a commemorative gift, saying, “We will not forget the hard work you all put in.”

DOI Ryosuke Awarded the Okayama Prefecture Sports Special Award   Updated on January 4, 2023

On January 4th, a ceremony was held to honor DOI Ryosuke, who won a silver medal in the men’s team event and a bronze medal in the men’s floor exercise event at the 51st Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, with the Okayama Prefecture Sports Special Award.

Doi expressed his aspirations for the future, saying, “What I learned in Okayama has become my current strength. Going forward, I would like to aim for the Paris Olympics, with the goal of winning gold medals in both individual and team events.”

Governor Ibaragi greeted the gymnast and told him, “I understand that is difficult to be a top athlete, but I look forward to seeing your future success.”

On December 22nd, the ceremony for the “Okayama Prefecture Management Innovation Award” was held to recognize companies that have set a good example for others, in order to raise awareness of the Management Innovation System and motivate other companies to be pro-active. Certificates and commemorative gifts were presented to the three winning companies.

FUJIWARA Hiroshi, President of Asagoe Industry Co., Ltd., which won the Grand Prix, said, “The difference in quality due to manual labor was an issue. We introduced robots and worked to improve that quality. Going forward into the future, I would like for us to continue to challenge ourselves”.

Governor Ibaragi congratulated the company, saying, “This is the result of your motivation and hard work. I look forward to your continued success”.

On December 15th, Okayama Prefecture native HIRUTA Mizuki, who won the world title in the “WBO World Women’s Super Flyweight Championship”, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Hiruta discussed her future aspirations, saying “I became the champion thanks to the support of many people. Going forward, I will not only defend my title, but also go after other belts. I want to get even stronger as I work towards my goal of fighting in Las Vegas”.

The Governor cheered on the boxer, saying, “I want many people to be thrilled by watching your matches”.

On November 30th, the sixth “Lively Talk With the Governor” of 2022 was held at Hotel New Hankyu Osaka in the city of Osaka.

This is the first time the event has been held outside of Okayama Prefecture since the start of the project in February 2013.

Under the theme of “Increasing the Number of People Working in Okayama: The Appeal of Working in Okayama From the Kansai Point of View”, six people who currently live or have lived in the Kansai region, including Okayama natives who plan to make a “U-turn” by returning to Okayama Prefecture for work this coming spring and employment support staff from universities with which Okayama Prefecture has employment support agreements, gathered for the session.

Following the participants’ self-introductions, a lively exchange of opinions was held on the appeal of working in Okayama from the Kansai point of view, encompassing ideas for promoting migratory employment (including “I-turn”, “J-turn”, and “U-turn” employment) and the current state of the job market.

On December 2nd, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Said Khalifa AL BUSAIDI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sultanate of Oman to Japan, came to Okayama to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi on the occasion of Fagiano Okayama U-13’s participation in an international friendly match in Oman. 

The Ambassador said, “Congratulations on making it to the final tournament. We are happy to have such strong Japanese soccer players visit Oman. In the future, we hope to form a partnership with Okayama through soccer and agricultural products”.

The governor replied, “Okayama also has a fruit with the same name as the capital of Oman, Muscat. I hope you enjoy Okayama in each of the four seasons,” and exchanged commemorative gifts with the Ambassador.

On November 25th, the fifth “Lively Talk With the Governor” of 2022 was held at the Industrial Promotion Building in Tamano City.

Under the theme of “Bizen as a Region Where One Can Live Brightly, Full of Vitality, and With a Smile: Efforts Towards Regional Revitalization That Utilize Unique Regional Characteristics”, six people, including those from the Bizen General Service Bureau - which received the Community Development Promotion Award and strives for unique community development, gathered for the session.

Following their self-introductions and an introduction of the activities that received the Community Development Promotion Award, a lively exchange of opinions was held regarding initiatives needed to promote regional development in the Bizen area going forward, ideas for solving problems effectively, and outlooks on the future.

On November 24th, HISHIKAWA Issin from Okayama Kourakukan High School, who placed in the Top 4 at the Red Bull BC One World Final 2022, a breakdance competition held in New York in America, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Hishikawa said, “I am happy that I was able to give it my all and make it into the world’s Top 4. I am not satisfied with stopping at this result; I want to do my best and aim for the medal podium at the Paris Olympics.”

Governor Ibaragi expressed his hope for the athlete’s even greater success in the future, saying, “It is a great source of pride to have athletes from Okayama be active on the global stage. I hope that you will continue your training and do your best for the Paris Olympics.”

The Okayama Prefectural Government has designated the period from November 17th to December 30th as a “Period of Strengthened Measures to Promote Vaccination Against Omicron” and is implementing various measures to help promote increased vaccination against the strain. As part of these efforts, on November 21st, the Governor held a public relations campaign in front of Okayama Station together with Okayama Seagulls players SEO Sayaka and NAKAI Kokone.

The Governor spoke to passerby on their way to work or school, telling them, “We are promoting getting vaccinated against Omicron,” while handing out pamphlets and other promotional materials.

2022 Okayama Marathon Hosted Successfully  Updated on November 13, 2022

On November 13th, the 2022 Okayama Marathon was held - the first time the marathon has been held in three years. In attendance to the event were Special Ambassador ARIMORI Yuko and Ambassador YAMAGUCHI Eri, who helped rouse excitement at the venue.

On the day of the marathon, 11,145 runners embarked on a 42.195 km course in Okayama City, with approximately 90% of participants finishing the race. Alongside the road, students from local junior high and high schools performed and enthusiastically cheered for the runners.

Governor Ibaragi also took up the challenge of running a full marathon for the first time. “It was a truly touching experience for me to be able to spend time with everyone who was running and to run myself, while receiving encouragement from many people alongside the road,” he said, expressing his joy at being able to finish the race.

On October 26th, the fourth “Lively Talk With the Governor” of 2022 was held at Akaiwa Municipal Iwanashi Junior High School.

For this session, under the theme of “Shifting Towards Community in Club Activities: Ensuring That Children Have Continuous Opportunities to Be Involved in Sports and Cultural Activities”, seven people, including junior high school principals and those working to improve the sports and cultural environment for children in the community, gathered. Following their self-introductions, the participants engaged in a lively exchange of views on what they had observed in their respective positions and the need for such activities, as well as the efforts necessary to promote such activities within the prefecture.

On October 14th, the third “Lively Talk With the Governor” was held at Share Atelier Umi-no-Kousha in Kasaoka City.

The theme of the session was “Linking Future Migration and Settlement to How Dual Residents Relate to Their Communities in the Post-COVID Era”, and five people, including dual residents and those working for regions that receive dual resident populations, gathered.

Following their self-introductions, there was a lively exchange of opinions regarding initiatives for promoting the increase of dual resident populations in the prefecture and effective ideas for getting talent from outside the prefecture to be more involved in their communities.

On October 14th, Smile Japan Director IIZUKA Yuji and team members HOSOYAMADA Akane and KOIKE Shiori paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Director IIzuka commented, “Okayama Prefecture will host the 2025 National Winter Sports Festival, which will help popularize the sport locally. I would like to express my appreciation for the efforts of the prefectural government officials”.

Governor Ibaragi expressed his gratitude for their guidance in prefecture-sponsored workshops.

On October 6th, Nataliya Gudziy came to Okayama and paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Before her performance on the bandura, a traditional Ukrainian instrument, Nataliya Gudziy greeted the Governor, saying, “I would like to give a performance that will remain in everyone’s hearts. Ukraine needs long-term support, and we hope that, through our culture, as many people as possible will become interested in Ukraine”.

The Governor wished her good luck on her nationwide tour, saying, “Take care of yourself”.

Holding of the 77th National Athletic Meet Rousing Ceremony   Updated September 21, 2022

On September 21st, the rousing ceremony of the 77th National Athletic Meet Ichigo Ichie Tochigi was performed in Okayama with approximately 300 athletes, coaches, and officials in attendance.

Governor IBARAGI, who serves as the leader of the meet, conferred the group’s flag to NAKANISHI Kosuke who will participate in the meet’s tennis matches.

The governor heartily stated, “This is the first meet in three years. Let’s grant wellness and courage to Okayama through these sports” and raised spirits by performing the Ganbaro Cheer.

On September 20th, TRYHOOP OKAYAMA’s representative NAKAJIMA Satoru, General Manager and Head Coach HIRUKI Kenji, player OKADA Rikuto, and player MAEMURA Yudai paid their respects to the governor before the opening of the 2022-23 season.

Representative NAKAJIMA spoke of his ambitions. “I’ve practiced many times in order to reach B2 (Basketball B League Division 2) this season. I’m pursuing success both for myself and the fans who support me.”

The governor has hopes high, saying “I would like to liven up Okayama alongside communicating the spectacular nature of these events.”

On August 18th, MIKI Shuto, the winner of the 27th Open Tournament Grand Champion Finals in the All-Japan Boys and Girls Karate Tournament, paid a courtesy call on Governor Ibaragi.

Miki said, “It was a tough match, but I’m happy to have won the tournament for the second time in a row following the tournament in April. I’m confident in my strength, but I want to perfect my technique in the future.”

The governor encouraged the student, saying, “I’m happy to see such a strong athlete come out of Okayama. Please do your best to win the tournament in November.”

On August 9th, the second “Lively Talk with the Governor” of 2022 was held at the Shiroyama Terrace Tsuyama Villa.

This time, six people related to Mimasaka-no-Kuni’s Umashikuni Project – “Tourism Promotion through Food” – gathered to discuss the project with the governor. Following a discussion on how the six members of the group came to be involved in the project, a lively exchange of opinions was held regarding impressions of the project, newly discovered issues and possibilities, and ideas for future projects to promote tourism in the Mimasaka area.

On August 3rd, Mr. Carl T. C. Gutierrez, President and CEO of the Guam Visitors Bureau, visited Okayama to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi and ask for cooperation regarding the restoration of the Okayama-Guam flight route.

Mr. Gutierrez said, “I hope that direct flights from Okayama will be resumed as soon as possible, and that everyone in Okayama will be able to visit Guam.”

The governor agreed, “It’s convenient to have direct flights. We hope to work together to revive this route.” The governor and CEO also exchanged souvenirs.

On July 27th, the Soshi Gakuen High School Baseball Team, which will participate in the 104th National High School Baseball Championship (also known as “Summer Koshien”), paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The governor provided words of encouragement to the team, saying, “Congratulations on your upcoming participation in Koshien. Everyone in the prefecture is cheering for you!”

This will be Soshi Gakuen High School’s first time participating in Summer Koshien in four years and their third time participating in the championship overall.

On July 21st, the first “Lively Talk with the Governor” of 2022 was held at Convex Okayama.

6 people, including representatives from companies from outside the prefecture who were invited to Okayama Prefecture, convened to discuss the revitalization of Okayama through corporate investment.

Following each company’s introduction, a lively discussion about how each company came to be located in Okayama prefecture, their current recruitment situations, and their expectations for prefectural support measures was held.

Ceremony Held for Departing JICA Volunteers Appointed as Okayama International Cooperation Ambassadors    Updated on July 15, 2022

On July 15th, a ceremony was held for JICA Volunteers departing from Okayama Prefecture to take on new appointments as Okayama International Cooperation Ambassadors.

MURAKAMI Midori will be dispatched to Cameroon and KIMURA Yusuke will be dispatched to Mozambique from Okayama Prefecture. Mr. Murakami expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I want to be a source of strength for the children. I hope to match the perspective of the local teachers and provide lessons the children will enjoy.”

Vice Governor Odani commented, “I would like to express my sincere respect for your noble resolution as you go to a country whose environment is very different from your home country. After returning to Japan, I hope that you will continue to use your experiences to cultivate global human resources.”

On July 4th, Okayama Seagulls, the Japan External Trade Organization Okayama (JETRO Okayama), and Okayama Prefecture established an agreement to cooperate with the goal of attracting direct flights connecting Okayama Momotaro Airport and Thailand, in order to further promote exchange between Okayama Prefecture and Thailand.

In his greeting, Okayama Seagulls’ President Kawamoto said, “We have signed a friendship agreement with the Thai Volleyball Association and hope to contribute to the local community through volleyball.” Director Aihara of JETRO Okayama, also stated, “Okayama Seagulls’ global strength will be a great asset for sales to Thailand. We will do our best as a bridge between companies in Okayama and Thailand.”

Five students from Okayama Prefectural University were appointed as Student Interpreter Guides (AKA: Prefectural Student Attendant) by Governor IBARAGI at the Prefectural Office on June 13th. This was the second such group of appointments this fiscal year.

The students presented the governor with self-designed hand towels, and stated their intentions to “communicate to tourists the joys of Okayama from a student’s perspective.” The governor encouraged them to “build up (their) experience as guides, and acquire a global point of view.”

Mitsubishi Motors Reveals its New Model of Light EV at the Prefectural Office  Updated June 13th, 2022

On June 13th, Mitsubishi Motors revealed its new model of light EV (electronic vehicle) at an opening ceremony at the Okayama Prefectural Office’s Citizen’s Room. Produced at Mitsubishi’s Mizushima Factory in Kurashiki, the new “eK X (Cross) EV” is made with parts provided by a number of local companies in Okayama.

Governor IBARAGI stated his ambitions, saying “the automotive industry is key to our prefecture, and I want to support their shift to EV’s.” The ceremony displayed the map of prefectural businesses providing parts to the production of the ek X EV, as well as the prefecture’s industrial promotion strategies.

On May 26th, players from Okayama Yunogo Belle came to visit Governor IBARAGI to express their aspirations for Okayama Prefecture Support Day. Yunogo Belle are part of the Japan Women’s Football League (nicknamed the “Nadeshiko League”), Division 2.

Team captain KAWAMURA Aino stated: “We are very grateful to the prefecture for holding this event. We will do our best to advance to Division 1.”

Governor IBARAGI expressed his anticipation for the team’s further efforts. “The success of Yunogo Belle has energized the local region. I’ll be rooting for you myself on the day of the event, and I’d love to see you do your best.”

On May 26th, the Okayama Prefecture, the Okayama Tourism Federation, and JR West’s Okayama Branch held a joint press conference to announce the general outline of the “Okayama Destination Campaign,” a large-scale tourism campaign to be held between July and September of this year.

Starting in June, major JR stations all over the country will be displaying posters and guidebooks to increase awareness of the campaign.

Governor IBARAGI expressed his ambitions for the campaign, stating: “Following the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope that this campaign will serve as a driving force towards tourism revitalization.”

On April 21st, Governor IBARAGI was visited by H.E.Mr. Gursel ISMAYILZADA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Japan.

The governor welcomed the ambassador by saying, “We are so happy to have you come to Okayama, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of foreign relations between our countries.”

Ambassador ISMAYILZADA responded, “Azerbaijan and Japan have both been called ‘Hi-no-kuni.’ (Land of Fire/Land of Sunlight, respectively) I think it will be important for us to maintain our relationships between local areas in our countries. We look forward to working with Okayama Prefecture in various capacities from here on out.” The governor and ambassador then exchanged commemorative gifts.

Okayama Prefectural Citizen’s Honor Award Presentation Ceremony   Posted April 15th, 2022

On April 15th, Okayama Prefecture bestowed its Prefectural Citizen’s Honor Award upon figure skaters KOMATSUBARA Misato and KOMATSUBARA Takeru (AKA Tim Koleto) for their success in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The couple earned bronze medals in the figure skating team event as part of the Japanese national team.

Governor IBARAGI praised the KOMATSUBARAs, saying, “Your performance on the rink was incredible, of course, and your hard work contributed greatly to the Japanese team’s success. For instilling hope and dreams in so many hearts in Okayama, your efforts are worthy of this Prefectural Citizen’s Honor Award.”

Misato responded, “We are so grateful to receive this award of honor. We owe it not only to our own strength, but to the support of every single person in the prefecture. My husband and I will keep working our hardest, so that children can believe in the power to make their dreams come true.”

On April 8th, Prefectural Governor IBARAGI was visited by Mr. YANG Keeho, Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Kobe.

Mr. YANG expressed his appreciation by saying, “In Korea we have a saying: ‘the weather represents a person’s feelings.’ I’m very grateful for the warm reception I received here in Okayama.”

The governor stated, “The route from Okayama Momotaro Airport to Seoul may be closed for the time being, but I’d like many visitors to come once the situation has settled down and we are able to resume operations. I hope to continue deepening our connection from here on.” The two then exchanged commemorative gifts.

On March 23rd, the Consul General of India, Osaka-Kobe, Mr. Nikhilesh Chandra GIRI, paid a visit to Governor IBARAGI in Okayama.

Mr. GIRI was quoted as saying, “India wants to continue working proactively with Okayama to increase our cultural and business exchange, as well as cooperation between our universities.” The governor responded, “Okayama would love to support the talented and energetic people of India any way we can,” before handing the Consul-General a gift of Japanese sake.

On March 15th, players and staff from Ota FC, who recently won the first ever championship for the JA ZEN-NOH Chibirinpic 2021 JA ZEN-NOH All-Japan Elementary Invitational Soccer Cup (January 22nd-23rd), paid a visit to Governor IBARAGI.

Captain TAKEYA Kaichi reported the win to the Governor, who offered the team some encouraging words: “Congratulations on your championship. Carry this experience with you and keep working hard from here on.”

The team received a secondary prize of 200kg of Hyogo-produced Sandamai Koshihikari rice. In the interest of improving social welfare, they donated the rice to Kodomo Shokudo, which provides free or inexpensive meals to children in need.

On January 19th, International Pacific University, who won their fifth champion ship at the Japan National Intercollegiate Women’s Judo Weight Division Team Championship, making it their first champion ship victory in four years, as well as Soshi Gakuen High School Women’s Judo Club, who represented Okayama Prefecture and emerged victorious at the interscholastic athletic meet for the first time, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI.

ISHIOKA from Soshi Gakuen reported her championship victory to the governor: “There was a period where we weren’t able to get sufficient practice due to COVID-19, but we all kept our spirits up and were able to connect that to this result.”

On December 20th, His Excellency Mr. Martin TOMČO, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic in Japan paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI.

Ambassador TOMČO spoke about his connections with Okayama Prefecture, such as presenting the Cup of the Czech Republic at the 40th Sanyo Ladies Road Race (10km road course for registered members of Japan Association of Athletics Federations). Governor IBARAGI greeted the ambassador, saying, “The Czech Republic and Okayama Prefecture each have their own traditions. I hope we can continue to have relations from here onwards as well.”

On December 7th, Kibiji Momo Shipping Association, Okayama Prefecture’s largest production area for Fuyu Momogatari, the white peach that will be sold in the winter, presented Governor IBARAGI with the Fuyu Momogatari.

Fuyu Momogatari’s outstanding feature is its smooth flesh and its strong sweetness and scent. Association President ITASHIKI Takafumi said, “With its production volume increasing, we are now able to find it at supermarkets. I have no doubt that people will say that this white peach is delicious. By all means, I’d like for people both in Japan and overseas to enjoy it.”

An Event to Celebrate the Birth of Ryuo Champion FUJII Sota  Posted on November 25th, 2021

On November 25th, an event to celebrate the birth of the youngest Shogi player in history to earn four major titles, Ryuo Champion FUJII Sota, was held in Kurashiki City. Governor IBARAGI, along with 100 Shogi enthusiasts, were in attendance for the celebratory event. Local high school students presented the new Ryuo Champion with a flower bouquet and a coaster made from locally produced denim. FUJII gave commentary on the fourth game of the Ryuo series.

Ryuo Champion FUJII expressed his determination from here forward, stating, “Through this series, I was able to see many newfound aspects to improve on. I would like to devote myself to pursuing those improvements for next season”.

This time, five students from Okayama Joto High School gathered to speak with Governor IBARAGI. On October 26th, also known as Denim Day (holiday that celebrates denim as a staple daily-use item), four students studying denim at Ibara High School’s Department of Horticulture and Home Economics, accompanied by their school principal and instructors, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI to report the results of their studies and introduce the charm of Ibara Denim.

Donned in work wear and school club uniforms made from denim, the horticulture students reported the activity that they took part in. “We made denim products using the cotton that we raised ourselves. In cooperation with Ibara City Government, we would also like to present denim bags to students as a celebratory gift for their enrollment into elementary school.”

On October 5th, students from Okayama Seto Junior High School, the team that earned Okayama its first hockey championship at the 51st JOC Junior Olympic Cup National Junior High School Hockey Championship, and members of Okayama Hockey Association paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI.

Captain KANEKO Nanami spoke on behalf of the rest of the team, stating, “Our championship victory was thanks to the many people that supported us. We will keep up our practice and become an even stronger team.”

Governor IBARAGI praised the team and wish them further success in the future, saying, ”This is the result of your dedicated practice. I hope that this can become an opportunity for Okayama to build up more excitement over hockey.”

On September 13th, UEDA Ayano and NAMBA Ayumi, representatives of the 35th generation of Bizenyaki Komachi (staff selected to run the campaign for introducing Bizen Ware and promoting the Bizenyaki Festival in all areas across the nation), and KANESHIGE Yuho, vice president of Toyukai, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI to promote the “Bizenyaki Festival” substitution event, which was postponed for two consecutive years due to the effects of COVID-19.

Bizenyaki Komachi passionately stated that they “would like to convey the beauty of Bizen Ware to the younger generation”. The substitution events “Bizenyaki Thanksgiving” and “Online Bizenyaki Festival”, where you can purchase items at the store in Bizen City or online, respectively, will be held from October 1st to October 31st.  

Opening Ceremony Held for New Okayama Budokan Training Dojo   Posted on September 1st, 2021

岡山武道館新練習道場 落成記念式を開催

Preceding its opening to the public, an opening ceremony for the new training dojo of Okayama Budokan was held on September 1st.

Okayama Budokan, boasting its title as the largest facility in Western Japan, was built in 1970. However, due to its deterioration in recent years, it was demolished in December 2019, and its reconstruction was completed in August 2021.

At the ceremony, Governor IBARAGI and martial arts affiliates did a tape cutting, celebrating the launch of the new training dojo.

The main dojo, located parallel to the new training dojo, is also scheduled to receive repair construction.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay:Okayama Sacred Fire Festival Collection and Departure Flame Ceremony   Posted on August 16th, 2021

On August 16th, a ceremony for the collection of flames that were lit in all municipalities of Okayama Prefecture was held at the Athletics Stadium of the Okayama Prefectural Multipurpose Grounds, with Vice Governor ODANI in attendance. The flames were sent off to Tokyo as “Okayama’s Flame”.

The flames from the 27 municipalities were torch-lit by Mr. OE Yuya, Mr. MATSUMOTO Tomokazu and Mr. YAMADA Shunpei, all of whom are 2021 Okayama Paralympian Development Project athletes selected for their high performance. In his departure declaration, Mr. OE stated, “I hope the sacred fire born from Okayama’s flame will serve as encouragement to all of the athletes out there.”

Okayama’s Flame will join the flames from all prefectures of Japan to serve as the Sacred Flame of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The first “Iki-Iki Talk with the Governor” of 2021 was held on August 2nd at Michi-no-Eki Kumenan (roadside rest area, Kumenan).

The theme of this Iki-Iki Talk was “Revitalizing the Okayama Community, Creating a Mutual Support System between Diverse Entities”. Residents engaging in regional activities in regions registered as Okayama Revitalization Communities, support institutions and a specialist gathered to take part in the discussion. The participants actively exchanged opinions on various topics, including the support system between regional residents and ideas for revitalizing communities.

National Tree Planting Festival: Okayama Committee’s Third Meeting  Posted on July 30th, 2021

On July 30th, the Okayama Committee for the 74th National Tree Planting Festival held their third meeting in Okayama City. The festival is scheduled to be held in spring 2024 in Okayama Prefecture.

The National Tree Planting Festival, held every year, is the main event for the National Land Afforestation promotion campaign and is attended by the emperor and empress. The species of trees to be planted and seeded by the emperor and empress were discussed at the meeting.

The 74th Natural Tree Planting Festival will be the second held in Okayama, and the first in 57 years (the last being held in 1967).

On July 6th, 26 students from Okayama Prefectural University were appointed as Okayama Prefecture Student Attendants (student interpreter-guide).

The aim of this project is to have university students use their English skills to acquire knowledge as a tour guide for foreigners, show tourists the charm of Okayama’s sightseeing spots through the eyes of our youth, and improve on inbound tourism satisfaction.

Ms. KAWABATA expressed her ambition on behalf of the students, saying, “Us students would like to re-discover the charms of Okayama and disseminate the results on a global scale”. Governor IBARAGI spoke of his hopes and expectations, stating “I hope that your performance can help to improve the reputation of our tourism sites and that you may learn a lot from this activity.”

COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout at the Prefecture-run Vaccination Center  Posted on June 14th, 2021

On June 14th, Okayama Prefecture’s mass COVID-19 vaccine rollout for healthcare workers began at Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center.

The governor paid a visit to the site for observation and commented, “I hope to quickly secure herd immunity”.  Depending on the progress of the vaccine rollout, the prefectural government will consider expanding vaccination for general citizens.

The Implementation of Flood-preparedness Drills    Posted on June 2nd, 2021

水害対策訓練を実施しました

On June 2nd, in preparation for heavy rains and typhoons, about 360 people from Okayama Prefecture, its municipalities and 49 related institutions gathered to participate in disaster drill training. These drills simulated situations in which torrential rains have occurred.

The drill training was held through a web meeting system and included an information exchange and gathering between the municipalities and organizations, as well as drill training for emergency response.

The prefectural government is putting efforts into preparing for natural disasters through continuing drills under close cooperation with municipalities and related institutions.

On May 11th, IRIS OHYAMA Inc. finalized their agreement for setting up a new factory in the Setouchi City Industrial Park, whose construction is currently being planned. A ceremony for the finalization of the MOU was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office.

The Okayama Setouchi Factory, established by IRIS OHYAMA Inc., will be equipped with one of the biggest automated warehouses in Japan and will serve as Western Japan’s distribution hub. The factory’s construction is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

On April 21st, amateur golf player KAJITANI Tsubasa, the first Japanese and Asian winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI.

Player Kajitani reflected on her tournament experience, stating, “I learned the necessity for greater physical strength and technical skill from this experience. My ultimate goal is to be a professional golf player that can compete at a worldwide level.”

Governor Ibaragi looks forward to her future performance saying, “What you have accomplished is truly amazing. Your performance encouraged many people. I wish you luck from here on.”

On April 6th, the Spring 2021 Residents’ Traffic Safety Campaign was held at AEON Mall in Kurashiki City.

Governor IBARAGI called on the campaign’s slogan “Be considerate. Compassion is the way to an accident-free environment”. Traffic safety public awareness goods, which were donated by cooperating organizations, were presented the group that implemented traffic safety public awareness activities within the community.

On March 23rd, a launch event was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Building for “Discover Okayama Karuta” Japanese playing cards, which showcase various charming aspects of Okayama through creative pictures.

In response to the many restraints caused by the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, these karuta cards were made to resurface awareness of the region’s charm and bounties. In January, 44 yomifuda (karuta cards with Japanese scriptures written on them) were selected out of 4,516 gathered submissions. During the demonstration events, members of Kurashiki Seiryo High School’s Karuta club displayed an extraordinary match with Governor IBARAGI.

Made along with this karuta set were a series of special videos that display the charm of Okayama through the design of the yomifuda.

The 14th “Mr. I Prize” Award Ceremony for Up and Coming Artists of Okayama Posted on March 17th, 2021

On March 17th , the presentation ceremony of the 14th Okayama Budding Artist Award, the “Mr. I Prize”, was held at Renaiss Hall. The prize is awarded to up and coming artists of Okayama Prefecture.

During the ceremony, Governor IBARAGI presented certificates of commendation and commemorative prizes to grand prize winner Ms. KUDO Ayumi, and runner-up prize winners Mr. KASENO Yusuke and Ms. HANAFUSA Sayaka.

The Mr. I Prize was established in 2007 thanks to a significant contribution made Mr. ITO Kensuke (Takahashi City), aimed at fostering young artists to lead the next generation of Okayama.

The fifth “Iki-Iki Talk with the Governor” of 2020 was held on February 18th at ZIP Arena Okayama.

Individuals engaging in top club teams of Okayama and regional development through sports gathered to take part in a discussion, with “Inspiring Okayama through Sports - Sports’ Influence on Regional Revitalization” as the theme. The participants actively exchanged opinions on various topics, including sports’ ability to foster a sense of unity and dreams amongst people, the importance of investing in sports, as well as supporting second careers for post-retirement athletes.

A training camp for Japan representatives of Para Powerlifting was held in Okayama City from February 11th to 14th. The first day of training included a welcome reception in Okayama City, with Vice Governor KIKUCHI and Mayor OMORI in attendance.

Okayama Prefectural Government is working towards attracting national representatives for training camp, in hopes of promoting sports and revitalizing the region. Okayama hosting a training camp for Japan representatives of Para Powerlifting has been a yearly event since the 2018 fiscal year.

On January 21st, members of Shujitsu High School Women’s volley club visited governor IBARAGI Ryuta to report their triumphant victory at the 73rd National High School Volleyball Tournament, a feat that has not been accomplished in 25 tournaments.

The governor congratulated the champions, “your victory through tenacity, receiving and keeping the ball in play time after time, was sensational.” On behalf of the team and staff, member SUDA gave a word of appreciation, “We are grateful for the prefectural citizens who cheered for and supported us. We will continue pursuing victory at future tournaments as well.”

On January 15th, governor IBARAGI paid a visit to Kurashiki Central Hospital to observe and confirm the current status of the stringent treatment for COVID-19 patients.

Through the sincere voices of the doctors and nurses on site, governor IBARAGI confirmed the current state of affairs, such as the pressure of being obliged to make life choices on the medical scene due to the increasing number of patients, as well as the youth suffering from the aftereffects of COVID-19.

At a press conference following the observation, governor IBARAGI reiterated the importance of each and every citizens’ effort to implement proper infection countermeasures.

On December 23rd, Tryhoop Okayama paid a courtesy visit to Vice Governor YOKOTA before the 2020-2021 Season Home Opening Game of the Basketball B League (Division 3).

Representative NAKAJIMA Satoru stated, "Aiming for league champions, we wish to perform in a way that inspires the residents of Okayama Prefecture". Vice Governor Yokota encouraged their efforts, stating that he is counting on their performance to dispel the sense of stagnation caused by COVID-19.

On December 1st, Hirabayashi Metal (also known as HIRAKIN) Men’s Softball Club, 2020 Japan Men’s Softball League Tournament champions, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI Ryuta.

On behalf of the team, Captain TORIYAMA Kazuya reported, “We felt a lot of pressure at our first local event, but we are all relieved to emerge victorious. The folks cheering for us became a pillar of support.”

Governor IBARAGI praised the team saying, "The championship game was an intense one. It was an extraordinary match that kept us at the edge of our seats," and wished the team further success in the future.

The third “Iki-Iki Talk with the Governor” of 2020 was held on November 25th at the Takahashi City Library.

Individuals involved in fruit production and distribution gathered to take part in a discussion centered on “Okayama, the Kingdom of Fruits” grape promotion.

They actively exchanged opinions on various topics, such as Okayama’s challenges, effective initiatives, necessary efforts and prospective views on the promotion of grapes.

Okayama Committee for the National Tree Planting Festival Established      Posted on November 16th, 2020

全国植樹祭岡山県実行委員会の設立総会を開催

On November 16th, the Okayama Committee for the 74th National Tree Planting Festival, to be held in spring, 2024, was established in Okayama City.

The National Tree Planting Festival is the annual main event for a national land afforestation promotion campaign and is attended by the emperor and empress.

During the meeting, Governor IBARAGI was selected as Chairperson of the committee, and this fiscal year’s schedule was also discussed.

The 74th National Tree Planting Festival will be the second held in Okayama, and the first in 57 years (the last being held in 1967).

On October 1st, prior to the opening game of the Division 1 Women’s V-league 2020-2021 season, members of the Okayama Seagulls paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI to report on the opening of the season and promise their future success.

The team will play against JT Marvelous in the opening game on October 17th, aiming in earnest for their long-desired first championship.

On September 18th, the Autumn 2020 Prefectural Citizens’ Traffic Safety Departure Ceremony was held at front area of the prefectural government building. Traffic police unit motorcycles and patrol cars set out to promote awareness and enforce traffic safety.

Under the slogan “Be considerate. Compassion is the way to an accident-free environment”, we set the safety of pedestrians and bicycle riders as our primary goal by calling on the citizens to abide by the traffic rules and improve their traffic manners.

On August 21st, the members of the Meisei Gakuin High School Calligraphy Club, won the MEXT Minister’s Award (first prize for individual category) at the 43rd All Japan Senior High School Cultural Festival and has obtained multiple prestigious awards at national events, paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI.

The Governor celebrated with the club stating, “I am very pleased that you’ve produced such amazing results. Your daily effort and successful experience through calligraphy will serve as something you will treasure in the future.”

Club President Ms. HARADA, expressed her gratitude with the following statement, “This year has been unusual due to COVID-19, but we will be diligent in our work, take life one day at a time and move towards our dreams.”

The EV Monitoring System Test Drive Project is being conducted in hopes of popularizing the eco-friendly electric vehicle (EV). The EV will be test driven in a vast variety of daily life settings, such as commuting and shopping, widely displaying the attractiveness of the vehicle.

The kickoff ceremony was held on July 22nd, and the test driving began. The designated test drivers include announcers and reporters of local commercial broadcasting companies as well as members of the Okayama Seagulls volleyball team.

On July 16th, the first Iki-Iki Talk of 2020 with the governor was held at the Sugai-tei House in Shinjo-son village.

Entrepreneurs, migrants and a farmer involved in activity in hilly and mountainous areas gathered to take part in a discussion, with “on the charm of the local community” as the theme. They exchanged opinions on various topics, such as the charm and potential of the local community discovered through their activities and effective initiatives for promotion.

On June 2nd, the Okayama Dairy Cooperative Association paid a courtesy visit to Governor IBARAGI and presented him with 3,000 packs of milk and 2,000 plastic bottles of yogurt. The visit was part of June's “Monthly Milk” activities.

The prefecture is using these local products to promote dairy consumption in Okayama. This includes distributing them to visitors at prefecture-sponsored events.

May 12th was Nurse’s Day, established to commemorate the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Governor IBARAGI presented a bouquet of flowers to Chairperson MIYATA Akemi of the Okayama Nursing Association as a token of appreciation for nursing staffs dealing with COVID-19.

Governor IBARAGI extended his thanks to her, saying, “On behalf of the citizens of Okayama Prefecture, I would like to express our appreciation to nurses struggling every day on the front line.” Chairperson MIYATA said, “In-hospital infections have left nurses at their wit’s end. But we are encouraged by the governor’s kind consideration.”

Friday Ovation was held on April 24th. This initiative gives an applause of thanks to the health workers on the front line, who constantly put themselves at risk in order to treat and prevent the spread of infection. Friday Ovation also gives an applause of encouragement to all workers giving their best in their respective fields. 

This project takes place every Friday at noon.

On March 18th, a presentation ceremony of the 13th Okayama Budding Artist Award, the “Mr. I Prize”, was held at Renaiss Hall. The prize was presented to budding artists related to Okayama.

During the ceremony, Governor IBARAGI presented certificates of commendation and commemorative prizes to grand prize winner Mr. HIRAKO Yuichi and encouragement prize winners Ms. HIHARA Seiko and Ms. YAMADA Ayaka.

The Mr. I Prize was established thanks to a donation from Mr. ITO Kensuke, born in Takahashi City, with the aim of fostering young artists to lead the next generation of Okayama.

On February 21st, the Ceremony 2019 of Okayama Prefecture Top Athlete Award, presented to athletes with superlative performances in international games, was held at the Okayama Prefectural Office.

48 individuals and 19 groups were given the award. In addition, one individual was presented with the Okayama Prefecture Sports Masters Award and two individuals and one group were inducted into the Okayama Prefecture Honorary Sports Hall of Fame.

Governor IBARAGI said, “I hope more athletes compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to further develop athletics in Okayama.”

On the behalf of the award recipients, MAEDA Honami, a member of the Tenmaya Women’s Athletic Club and 2020 Tokyo Olympic marathon representative said, “I hope to achieve great results to show the world the strength of athletics in Okayama.”

Coming off of a second place finish for the Division 1 Women’s V-league 2019-2020 season, members of the Okayama Seagulls visit Governor Ibaragi on January 30th.

Team manager Kawamoto reported results for the 2019-2020 season, and captain Yoshida spoke about her aspirations, expressing, “I regret falling just one step short of victory, but our team has shown its growth.”

Governor Ibaragi presented the team with commemorative gifts, stating “Coach Kawamoto paving the way for the players’ steady effort and development made me very proud.“

International citizens residing in Okayama Prefecture and personnel involved in the acceptance, coexistence and securement of foreign human resources within local communities met to discuss “The Realization of a Multicultural Society”.

The participants exchanged opinions on various topics including their impressions of Okayama as residents and ideas for solving challenges faced during exchange activities, consultation services and accepting foreign human resources.

On December 6th, SHIBUNO Hinako, who became the AIG Women's British Open Champion this past August, was presented with the Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation. 

Governor IBARAGI said, “Winning the British Open is amazing, and you have continued your excellent performance since then. I am tremendously happy to see your success as an Okayama-raised athlete. I am very proud to present you to this prize on behalf of the citizens of Okayama, to whom you have brought much joy.” He presented her with a certificate of commendation and a commemorative gift.

Ms. SHIBUNO said with a big smile, “It’s such an honor to receive this prestigious prize. I was born in Okayama and have been supported and fostered by the community here. I will try harder to show my gratitude, so please continue to cheer me on.”

“Autumn Fantasy Garden” Opening Ceremony Held at Okayama Korakuen Garden  Posted on November 15th, 2019

岡山後楽園「秋の幻想庭園」オープニングセレモニーを開催

The opening ceremony for Okayama Korakuen Garden’s “Autumn Fantasy Garden” and Okayama Castle’s “Autumn Ujo Illumination Dream Night” was held on November 15th.

Accompanied by a shamisen (Japanese guitar) performance on Sawanoike Pond’s floating stage, all of the garden’s illuminations were lit up at governor IBARAGI’s signal.

The beautiful colors of the autumn leaves displayed at Okayama Korakuen Garden were illuminated. Many events, including tea ceremony workshops at the Kakumei-kan House, Korakuen Night Market (gourmet event) at the western outer garden, were held until November 24th.

A meeting between governor IBARAGI and Okayama City’s mayor OMORI was held at Okayama Prefectural Office on November 1st.

At the meeting, governor IBARAGI and mayor OMORI discussed cooperation on flood control measures and support policies for foreign nationals. They also confirmed the continuation of problem solving under cooperation between prefecture and city.

On October 1st, five technical trainees from Brazil, Argentina, China, Cambodia and Mongolia came to Okayama as participants of the Local to Local Overseas Technical Trainee Hosting Project run by the Prefectural Government. They and their host institutions paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

At the meeting, they talked about what they had learned during their 3-to-4 month visits, such as future aspirations and overall impressions of Okayama. The Governor said based on his own experiences studying abroad that, “I look forward to all of you contributing to the development of your home country using the techniques and knowledge that you have acquired, while also enjoying your stay in Okayama”.

On September 26th, SONE Akira, International Pacific University (IPU), World Judo Championships Tokyo 2019 winner, was presented Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation at the Okayama Prefectural Government.

Governor Ibaragi said, “Congratulations on your victory at the World Judo Championships. I hope you can compete and medal in the Olympics after winning the next competition in Osaka (Grand Slam Osaka). Recently, Okayama’s female athletes have been performing impressively. Please continue to be diligent and do your best.” He presented her with a certificate of commendation and a commemorative gift.

SONE answered powerfully, saying, “I’m happy to be champion. There’s lots of important matches coming up, but I’m going to do my best to win them one game at a time.”

From August 25th to 31st, Governor Ibaragi, together with prefectural enterprises, visited Silicon Valley in order to support their overseas business activities on the sidelines of the Japan Governors’ Meeting convened by the U.S.-Japan Council.

The Governor exchanged opinions with California state government and local enterprises, and promoted local products and technology at the exhibition.

On August 17th and 18th, the “Land of Sunshine Sports and Host Town Fest – One year to go to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020” was held at AEON MALL Okayama Mirai Square in Kita-ku, Okayama-shi.

Following the opening ceremony attended by Vice Governor Sato, a talk show between Olympians and Paralympian was conducted, along with various demonstrations. In addition, hands-on sports booths and host town promotion corners were set up, allowing everyone from children to adults to enjoy the event.

JICA Volunteers Departure Meeting Held          Posted on July 11th, 2019

On July 11th, a departure meeting for JICA Volunteers from Okayama Prefecture was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government.

The three volunteers will be dispatched to the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the Republic of Rwanda and Malaysia, and will spend about two years contributing to development in their respective countries while working in fields such as electricity, education and medical welfare.

Vice Governor Kikuchi offered words of encouragement, “The countries to which you’re being dispatched have a very different culture, especially in language and lifestyle. However, please do your best to contribute to the development of your respective countries, making full use of your knowledge and ability.” The vice governor also delegated the volunteers as “Okayama International Cooperation Ambassadors,” to serve as bridges between the citizens of Okayama Prefecture and the people of their assigned countries, and presented them with letters of appointment to that effect.

On July 5th, a training delegation comprised of 30 students and staff from educational institutions conducting educational exchange with the Kake Educational Institution paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Okayama Prefectural Government. These institutions included the Wright State University and University of Findlay of the State of Ohio, United States of America; the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana and the Federal University of Parana of the State of Parana, Federative Republic of Brazil.

Governor Ibaragi said based on his own experiences studying abroad that, “Travelling overseas and experiencing other cultures at a young age was very important to me. I hope this training in Japan can provide meaningful experiences to you.”

On June 27th, prior to the 2019 Volleyball Women’s Summer League Western Games to be held at Zip Arena Okayama, players participating in the Games, Director General Oki of the Japan Volleyball League Organization, and Director Makimoto of the Okayama Volleyball Association paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

After Director General Oki’s announcement of holding the Games, Ms. Yoshida, representative for the Okayama Seagulls, expressed her wishes: “We, as fresh new faces, will strive for the championship in order to encourage the people of our home regions.” The governor followed by saying, “I hope you will put in a powerful performance to ignite the passions of your communities,” before presenting gifts to the players and directors.

On June 24th, the ceremony granting certification to athletes targeted for high performance by the Olympian and Paralympian Development Project 2019 was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government.

The objective of this project is to support for more athletes who have a connection with Okayama Prefecture so they can compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Governor Ibaragi stated, “I think that it is a momentous occasion in your lives for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in your home country. Seeing your efforts to participate in the games will be a huge encouragement to your fellow citizens. Please do your best; the citizens of Okayama and I will be rooting for you.”

On May 27th, a meeting was held at Okayama Prefectural Government Office for returning JICA Volunteers (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Senior Volunteers).

Three Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and one Senior Volunteer returned from four countries, the Republic of Mozambique, Mongolia, the Republic of Chile, and the Republic of Ghana, respectively. The volunteers, all from Okayama prefecture, shared their stories and valuable experiences from abroad with Vice Governor Kikuchi.

JICA Volunteer Programs are overseas volunteer programs conducted by JICA, the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Deputy Minister Magyar said, “This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Hungary, so I hope to further deepen friendships.”

At the meeting, they discussed future business exchanges between Okayama and Hungary.

The Governor celebrated with the club, stating, “It is very difficult to even enter the national invitational tournament, so winning the championship is amazing. I think that striving for victory and strong teamwork will serve as a useful experience for you to draw on in the future.”  The Club President, Ms. Ishii, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am so happy we could win the national tournament. We will also try to win the National Inter-High School Championship Summer Cup.”

On March 27th, the members of the Meisei Gakuin Senior High School Japanese Calligraphy Club, which won the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister’s Award (first prize for individual category) at the 62nd National New Year Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition and has obtained several prestigious awards at various national events, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The Governor celebrated with the club stating, “I am very pleased that you achieve such amazing results every year.”
The Club President, Ms. Namba, expressed her gratitude with the following statement, “After the disaster that struck Okayama this past year, we want to try and encourage many people through our work.”

The Okayama Prefectural Government and Okayama University finalized an agreement for mutual cooperation relating to regional industry development projects in collaboration with universities, aiming to develop technologies of local businesses in Okayama and promote education and research of universities, and to revitalize the region.

According to this agreement, the government plans to establish the Joint Research Center between Industry and Universities (tentative name) in Okayama University.

The Ambassador talked about the Pune Okayama Friendship Garden, a Japanese-style garden, located in Pune, India and they discussed future business exchanges between Okayama and India.

On January 17th, an agreement regarding pre-game training camps for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games was formalized with the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation in Madrid,Spain. According to this agreement, the Spanish national athletics team selected for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will hold their pre-game training camps in Okayama City.

This is the fourth agreement relating to pre-game training camps in Okayama Prefecture. Okayama is set to host those camps for Spain’s judo team in Okayama City, Bulgarian badminton team in Okayama City and New Zealand’s weightlifting team in Kurashiki City.

Meeting Held for Senior High School Students Affected by the Heavy Rain Disaster Returning from Egypt           Posted on January 7th, 2019

On January 7th, after being affected by the heavy rain disaster in July of 2018, a meeting for Okayama’s senior high school students who were invited to the Arab Republic of Egypt by the Egyptian Government was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government.

At the meeting, they talked about their impressions of the pyramids, the temples and the friendliness of the Egyptian people, and expressed their hopes of studying more English.

The Governor encouraged them based on his own experiences studying abroad, “Your experiences through travelling abroad will have great efforts in your future life. Taking advantage of this visit, I hope you will be a person who can help people in need.”

Okayama Prefectural Policy Awarded Advanced Policy Grand Prize from National Governors’ Association          Posted on December 3rd, 2018

On December 3rd, a debriefing meeting was held in order to report to the Governor on policies that had been awarded as outstanding policies at the 11th Advanced Policy Creation Council held in Tokyo in November.

At the council, Okayama’s five prefectural policies were awarded. One of these policies, a first in Japan which focus on the prefecture supporting the municipalities through creating a service where residents from among the local community cooperate and accompany each other while using the welfare institution’s vehicles during its unused times to support the elderly, has received the grand prize as an advanced policy-a policy managed by the Senior Citizens Division.

On November 15th Dr. Werner Koehler, Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Osaka-Kobe, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The Governor received words of condolence and encouragement from the Consul-General regarding the disaster caused by the heavy rain in July. They also discussed future exchanges between Okayama and Germany.

On November 2nd, the Okayama Prefectural Government entered into a comprehensive collaboration agreement, one with the Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, and another one with Sumitomo Life Insurance Company―their aim of strengthening close collaborations and further promoting Okayama’s revitalization through various efforts by effectively utilizing the resources held by both.

According to this agreement, they will all work on improving welfare and health, ensuring the safety and security of the region and lifestyle, and developing support for the elderly and the disabled.

On October 31st, nine overseas local government officials, who came from the United States of America and Canada to participate in the Local Government Exchange and Cooperation Seminar hosted by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations(CLAIR), paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The delegation is planning to inspect companies in Okayama Prefecture and hold discussions under the theme of Okayama industry development. The Governor said, “I hope this visit can deepen your understanding of Okayama Prefecture and provide a meaningful experience to both our regions.

On October 4th, four Technical Trainees from Brazil, China and Cambodia came to Okayama as participants of the Local to Local Overseas Technical Trainee Hosting Project run by the Prefectural Government, and paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

At the meeting, they expressed about what they had learned during their approximately 4 month long visit, such as future aspirations and overall impressions of Okayama. The Governor said, “I look forward to all of you contributing to the development of your home country using the techniques and knowledge that you have acquired, while also becoming bridges of friendship between your home country and Okayama Prefecture”.

On September 21st, Autumn Traffic Safety Prefectural Citizens’ Campaign Promotion Event 2018 was held at the front area of the prefectural building.

Members of the Okayama Technical High School Cycling Club were appointed as Traffic Safety Ambassadors.  A representative student expressed his determination toward the prevention of traffic accidents.

After that, twelve bicycle-riding Traffic Safety Ambassadors and six traffic police unit motorcycles departed to promote awareness and manage traffic.

On September 14th, the Emperor and Empress visited Mabi District in Kurashiki City that was hit hard by the torrential rain in western Japan.  After hearing the accounts of the damage by Governor Ibaragi, the Emperor and Empress saw the collapsed levee of Oda River.

Following that, the Emperor and Empress met about 30 evacuees and rescue workers at the Mabi General Park Gymnasium and spoke to each one words of sympathy and appreciation.

On August 7th, it has been one month since the heavy rain in July, 2018, and the Okayama Prefectural Government displayed a vertical banner on the north side of the Prefectural Government Building wall to heighten the momentum towards recovery.

Governor Ibaragi said, “We and the whole of Okayama will work to the best of our abilities to aid Okayama with prompt recovery and reconstruction.”

On August 7th, the Okayama Prefectural Government and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation finalized an agreement with the aim of promoting industries with realizing the regions shift to EVs in Okayama, and to utilize effectively resources held by both relating to electric vehicles (EVs) and plug in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

According to this agreement, the government will work on developing support for new technologies and products related to EVs and PHEVs by local businesses in Okayama.

On July 23rd, a donation presentation ceremony for West Japan Floods July in 2018 was held at Prefectural Government Office.

Mr. Kazunari Ninomiya, a member of Arashi, presented the Governor a 50 million yen donation from the Arashi’s Wakuwaku School 2018 proceeds and relief goods for evacuation centers.

Mr. Ninomiya said, “I would like to provide my full support for the people having a hard time from the disaster.” The Governor extended his thanks to him, “On behalf of the prefectural citizens, I would like to express my great appreciation for your kind aid to encourage and provide emotional support to many victims of the disaster.”

災害時公衆衛生活動への協力に関する協定を追加締結

On July 5th, the Okayama Prefectural Government finalized an agreement with Okayama Acupuncture & Moxibustion Association, Okayama Retired Public Health Nurse Association Momo no kai and Japan Health Fitness Programmers' Association Okayama Branch, with the terms of organizing a public health activity team to protect the disaster victims’ health at the time of disaster.

According to this additional agreement, the agreement partners reach a number of 22 vocational organizations and team activities will be developed by securing human resources as team members and adding new types of professions.

On June 22nd, a departure meeting for JICA Volunteers from Okayama Prefecture was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office.   

The five volunteers will be dispatched to developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Oceania, and will spend the next two years contributing to development in their respective countries while working in fields such as education, sports, and community development.

Vice Governor Miyachi offered words of encouragement, while entrusting them with the role of serving as bridges between prefectural citizens and the people of their assigned countries as “Okayama International Cooperation Ambassadors”, and presenting them with letters of appointment to that effect.

On June 1st, press conference for a PR event to audition actors for HALLEWOOD, which will select people to appear in a PR video for Okayama Prefecture, was held at the Tottori Okayama Shimbashikan, a shop that sells local goods to the capital city area.

Governor Ibaragi and “Chidori”, a manzai comedy duo and Land of Sunshine Ambasaddors, attended a press conference. Nobu, a member of Chidori, called on people saying “people from outside of Okayama Prefecture are also eligible to apply; I would like to ask for Chidori’s fans to apply for an audition. I am looking forward to meeting strong personality types.”

Debriefing Meeting Held for Returning Japan JICA Volunteers        Posted on May 24th, 2018

On May 24th, a debriefing meeting was held at Okayama Prefectural building for returning JICA Volunteers (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Senior Volunteers).

Two Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and two senior volunteers returned from three countries, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Independent State of Samoa, Mongolia, respectively. The volunteers, all from Okayama prefecture, shared their stories and valuable experiences from abroad with Vice Governor Miyachi.

At the start of Cool Biz Prefectural Citizens’ Campaign, on May 1st, Vice Governor Sato and Director General Katayama of the Department of Environment and Culture visited the Okayama Association of Corporate Executives and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Okayama Prefecture to request their cooperation in the Cool Biz Campaign for them to encourage other member organizations to implement it as well.

The Cool Biz Prefectural Citizens’ Campaign runs from May 1st to October 31st.

※Cool Biz is a lifestyle campaign designed to allow workers to be comfortable in temperatures up to 28 degrees Celsius so as to minimize air conditioning use in summer.

On March 23rd, comedian and Okayama City native, Ms. Blouson Chiemi assumed office as one of Okayama’s “Land of Sunshine Ambassadors” and an appointing ceremony was held at the Tottori Okayama Shimbashi-kan, a specialty shop that sells local goods to the Tokyo city area.

Ms. Blouson Chiemi walked onstage wearing an outfit featuring motifs of muscat grapes and white peaches, which are specialty products of the prefecture. She expressed her enthusiasm stating “I am very glad to assist Okayama so that it can be appreciated by people from other prefectures. I will do my best.”

From now on, as an ambassador, Ms. Blouson Chiemi will provide information on activities related to Okayama from outside of the prefecture and assist with its PR efforts etc.

On March 20th, Ms. Nozomi Fukumoto, the Ambassador of Tokyo Disney Resort, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2018, along with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Governor Ibaragi stated, “Disney Land is a place where people can always come to just feel happy.  I hope that prefectural citizens will visit Disney Land using Okayama Momotaro Airport.” Ms. Fukumoto responded, “I hope everyone will please come see the new daily parade!”

On February 23rd, the Okayama Prefecture Top Athletes Award Ceremony 2017 was held at the Okayama Prefectural Office.

61 individuals and 11 groups were commended with the Okayama Prefecture Top Athletes Award, 1 individual was commended with the Okayama Prefecture Sports Masters Award and 2 individuals were commended with entry into the Okayama Prefecture Honorary Sports Hall of Fame. The recipients were presented a certificate and an award by Governor Ibaragi.

On January 19th, 2018, the second version of a PR video produced for Okayama Prefecture was screened at the Okayama Prefectural Government Building. Governor Ibaragi and Mr. Tomoya Maeno from Kurashiki City, who is an actor, movie director and Okayama Land of Sunshine Ambassador, along with four other “HALLEWOOD” actors and actresses attended this event.

Governor Ibaragi stated “I had wondered about how to express the themes of ‘Immigration and Enterprise Promotion’ through a PR video, but things went according to plan and I am very pleased with the result.”

Movie Director Maeno responded, “It was a difficult theme, but I was very excited. The finished video was wonderful, in a few words; it was a “good job, Ii ne”.  I hope to go for a world-class prize with a HALLEWOOD production.”

Okayama Technology Exhibition (OTEX) 2018       Posted on January 17th, 2018

The 2018 Okayama Technology Exhibition, which is the largest exhibition and business meeting of the mechanical manufacturing technology field in the Chugoku/Shikoku regions, was held at Convex Okayama for two days starting January 17th.

Exhibition sites were crowded with about 9,100 visitors, which was the about the same as the largest past convention. 172 small and medium size companies and organizations in Okayama actively promoted their best processing technology and manufactured products to further the campaign for “Manufacturing Prefecture, Okayama”.

Following his opening speech, Governor Ibaragi encouraged exhibitors to walk around the booths and talk with senior high school students.

On December 4th, five organizations including Okayama Prefecture, the City of Okayama, the Okayama Prefectural Judo Federation, International Pacific University and the Spanish Judo Federation formalized an agreement regarding pre-games training camps for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

According to this agreement, the Spanish national judo team selected for the Tokyo Olympics taking place on July 24th, 2020 will hold their pre-game training camps in Okayama City as well as develop further mutual exchange through Judo between Okayama Prefecture and the Kingdom of Spain.

According to this agreement, the Bulgarian national team selected for the Tokyo Olympics taking place on July 24, 2020 will hold their pre-games training camps in Okayama City as well as develop further mutual exchanges through Badminton between Okayama Prefecture and the Republic of Bulgaria.

On November 30, Mr. Wisnu Edi Pratignyo, Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Osaka paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Because the Consul-General is leaving his position at the end of this year, he discussed his memories during his term in office and encouraged the strengthening of exchange and cooperation between Okayama Prefecture and Indonesia in the fields of tourism and business.

On November 17, the “Autumn Fantasy Garden”, a special night-time lighting event, opened at Okayama Korakuen Garden for the fall season. The Lighting Ceremony was held by the Governor Ibaragi with attendant guests.

At the Governor’s direction, all of the garden’s illuminations lit up the grass and the beautiful autumn colors of the leaves. It was accompanied by decorations of Wagasa,, (Japanese umbrellas) and an er-hu (a two-stringed Chinese violin) performance.

The event included Bizen-ware pottery and a stained glass exhibition inside the building and music performance at Noh stage. The “Autumn Fantasy Garden” event was held until November 26.

On October 28, Study Abroad Fair in Okayama 2017 was held together with co-host U.S. Consulate General Osaka-Kobe in Okayama City.

The Fair provided various information related to study abroad, including a talk show between Governor Ibaragi and television personality Mari Sekine, and consultations with various US universities.

Following the talk show, Governor Ibaragi walked around the venue, to the US university booths, other related organizations, while talking with US university officials and senior high school and university students.

On October 10, a delegation from South Australia led by Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

During the meeting, they exchanged opinions to strengthen the exchange and cooperation in a wide field between South Australia and Okayama Prefecture such as agriculture, manufacturing, education and health industry.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Sister-state relationship next year, the Minister passed on an invitation to visit South Australia to the Governor.

On August 9th, Governor Ibaragi was paid a visit by Miss Sakurako Hayashi and Mr. Dai Sakamoto, who attended training in places such as UN headquarters in New York in US as JCI JAPAN UN Youth Ambassadors, which was recruited by the Junior Chamber International Japan from around the country.

After receiving reports on their training from them, the Governor encouraged them saying, “I wish for you to talk about your valuable experiences to your friends.”

On July 12th, Governor Ibaragi was paid a visit by 2 of the representatives for Momotaro, the Momo-musume girls, who promote local fruit from Okayama in places such as Okayama Station.

The Momo-musume girls, upon giving peaches to Governor Ibaragi, stated their sincere desire to “promote Okayama through local goods such as peaches, so that people will want to visit over and over again.” The governor encouraged them by stating “Please do your best to promote the peaches which are carefully grown by our producers.”

Momotaro and the Momo-musume girls will have a special PR event from July 15th to August 6th.

On July 3rd, as the peak season of production draws closer, Ms. Ikeda, the mayor of Niimi city, and local producers of Japanese Gentian flowers visited Governor Ibaragi as part of a PR campaign.

Upon receiving a 100 stem bouquet from local producer Mr. Okuyama, Governor Ibaragi encouraged him by stating “While Niimi may be famous for its grade A, gourmet food products (such as chiyagyuu beef, and pione grapes) I am looking forward to the advancement of its blossoming flower industry.”

On June 5, a debriefing meeting was held at Okayama Prefectural building for returneing Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Senior Volunteer.

Three Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and one senior volunteer returned from four countries, the Republic of Senegal, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Vanuatu, respectively. The volunteers, all from Okayama prefecture, shared their stories and valuable experiences from abroad with Vice Governor Miyachi.

On June 1st, a PR event to audition actors for HALLEWOOD (A play on words referencing Okayama’s moniker as “Hare no Kuni” or “Land of Sunshine”), which will select people to appear in a PR video for Okayama Prefecture, was held at the Tottori Okayama Shimbashikan, a shop that sells local goods to the capital city area.

Governor Ibaragi and Mr. Tomoya Maeno from Kurashiki City, an actor, movie Director and Land of Sunshine Ambassador attended this event, calling on people to audition.

On May 31st, His Excellency Mr. Truong Tan Sang, the former president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, paid a visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The Governor replied, “I am looking forward to the exchange between Okayama and Vietnam becoming more prosperous as 21 Okayama based businesses have advanced into Vietnam’s market.

On May 25th, Ms. Orie Cho and Ms. Azusa Fujiwara from Okayama Prefecture, selected members of STU48, and paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi. STU48 is the sister group of AKB48 and whose activities are based in the Setouchi region.

They intently stated, “We would like to build up the Setouchi region and promote its beauty and Okayama’s advantages” and then presented a souvenir to Governor.

Governor encouraged them by saying “I am supporting you along with all of the prefectural citizens. Good luck.” and then presented a gift to them.

The STU48 members will have their first live performance at AEON MALL in Okayama on June 3rd.

April 8 marked the release of the film “The Peach and the Pheasant”. Governor Ibaragi greeted the audience on stage during the first day of screening with Director Kita, lead actress Aya Sakurai and cast member Mihiro.

Governor Ibaragi addressed the audience saying, “It is my hope for many people to watch this film filled with charms of Okayama.” Director Kita expressed his enthusiasm for this film stating, “I hope that this film will become a hit in Okayama, at this advanced screening and continue on out nationwide.”

On April 7, Director Kita, lead actress Aya Sakurai, cast member Mihiro and Executive Director Michiyoshi Narihiro from the film “The Peach and the Pheasant”, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi. This film is a story that takes place in Okayama Prefecture with parts shot on various locations around last August.

The Governor said, “Thank you for making a wonderful film that includes scenes of Okayama.”  Director Kita replied, “I included all the sights that I feel represent Okayama into this film.”

On March 30th, Kansai area comedian and Okayama City native, Mr. Asagoe GOE assumed office as one of Okayama’s “Land of Sunshine Ambassadors”.

Mr. Asagoe GOE will, as ambassador, promote Okayama activities from outside the prefecture, and assist the prefecture with its PR efforts etc.

Mr. Asagoe GOE received his letter of appointment and intently stated “I am very happy to be an ambassador. I want to continually promote Okayama to the people in Kansai.”

明誠学院高等学校書道部が知事を表敬訪問

On March 22nd, Governor Ibaragi received a visit by the members of the Meisei Gakuin Senior High School Japanese Calligraphy Club, which won the grand prize (First Prize for Individual Submission) at the “21st National High School and University Student Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition” (sponsored by the Japan Calligraphic Art Society) held in July of last year. The group received other prizes as well in group and individual categories, and has obtained several prestigious awards at various national events.

The Governor celebrated with the club stating “I believe that the amazing results they achieve every year are proof of the hard work they put forward each day. The efforts that take place at their school are an extraordinary asset.”

The Club President, Ms. Morinaka, expressed her gratitude with the following statement: “I am very happy at the results we are able to report after a year of hard work. We hope to continue to reach people’s hearts through our works.”

This award is to commend the companies which have achieved excellent results serving as a model for others among the Okayama Child Care Support Declaration Companies, striving positively to provide a work environment to balance work and childcare and support childcare in communities.

On February 17, 2016 Okayama Prefecture Top Athletes Award Ceremony, which presents awards to those who contributed to raising awareness of the prefectural sports, was held at Okayama Prefectural Government Office.

52 individuals and 14 groups were commended with the Okayama Prefecture Top Athletes Award, 2 individuals were commended with the Okayama Prefecture Sports Masters Award and 3 individuals and 2 groups were commended with entry into the Okayama Prefecture Honorary Sports Hall of Fame.

The awardees were presented certificates of commendation by Governor Ibaragi.

On January 23, Ms. Mayu Watanabe, a member of AKB48, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi in order to recruit the member of STU48 group, which is a sister group of AKB 48, whose activities are based out of the Setouchi region.

Ms. Watanabe stated “I can hardly wait because this will be the first attempt at performing on a ship and I would like to ask for the people of Okayama to support us.” and The Governor responded, “This is a wonderful plan to develop the Setouchi region. I hope that many people from Okayama will apply for STU48.”

Okayama Technology Exhibition 2017, which is the largest exhibition and business meetings for the mechanical manufacturing technology in the Chugoku Shikoku region, was held at Convex Okayama for two days from January 18.

Exhibition sites were crowded with about 7,300 visitors far exceeding the previous year. 152 small and medium size companies and organizations actively promoted their best processing technology and processed products to further the campaign for “Manufacturing Prefecture, Okayama”.

Governor Ibaragi made an opening speech and encouraged exhibitors to walk around the booths.

On December 26, the members from the Okayama City JA Fruit and Vegetables Producer’s Association Pakchee Branch, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor to expand production and carry out promotions for the Okayaman grown pakchee.

Okayaman grown pakchee is called the Okapaku. Pakchee has received attention such as “Pakchee Cuisine”, and was chosen as “2016 Dish of the Year” sponsored by Gurunavi Research Institute.

Pakchee Producer Ueda said “I am very glad that our activities including the use of the name of place, Okayama, have received praise.”  The Governor said, “I hope that the name Okapaku will reach out to a lot of places.”

On December 13, Mr. Toshiki Uematsu (Okayama University of Science High School), who participated in the 8th Asian Soft Tennis Championship and won the championship as the youngest player in Japanese Men’s doubles history, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

The Governor said, “Congratulations on securing the championship. I am proud of you and you are an ideal high school student. I wish you continued prosperity.”  Player Uematsu expressed his wishes, “I got a lot of support because this championship was held in Japan.  I would like to continue making efforts in securing the championship on the domestic and international competition.”

On November 18, a special night-time lighting “Autumn Fantasy Garden” opened at Okayama Korakuen Garden during the foliage season (Autumn leaves).

As a signal to light up the garden, therō nagashi was performed by Governor Ibaragi and others. All of the garden illuminations were lit up, with the grass decorated with Wagasa, Japanese umbrellas, and together with the beautiful autumn colored leaves.

The exhibition for the Wagasa Japanese umbrella museum and stained glass, and music performance at the Noh stage is held inside the building and with the “Autumn Fantasy Garden” until November 27.

On November 13, Okayama Marathon 2016 was held in Okayama City. This race has a high reputation from marathon participants because of Okayama’s charm, “Omotenashi(hospitality) food service” where local foods are provided such as ramen noodles, and medals made of traditional crafts, Bizen pottery and Sanada-himo strap, were given to those who finished the marathon.

About 16,000 runners including Governor Ibaragi, Mayor Omori of Okayama City, Okayama Marathon Special Ambassador Yuko Arimori and comedian Daigo of “Chidori”, raced through the streets of Okayama City viewing Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen Garden.

On November 1, a welcome ceremony was held at Muscat Stadium for the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles for their autumn training camp. Governor Ibaragi made a welcome speech and presented the team with Okayama local products such as “Okayama Wagyu” beef and “Shine Muscat” grapes.

Many fans visited the baseball stadium to cheer for Manager Nashida and the players.

This year is the sixth consecutive year that the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles had an autumn training camp at Muscat Stadium.

On October 23, a departure ceremony was held for the prefecture public health nurse team comprising of 6 members (public health nurses) who will be sent out to the stricken area by the earthquake centered in central Tottori Prefecture.

Governor Ibaragi provided words of encouragement, saying, “Please help and aid the health of the affected individuals.” A team member voiced their determination, “No matter how small, we will make efforts to provide relief to all residents.

This team will carry out health consultations for the residents at the evacuation center and other places.

On October 4, Athletes Tomoki Sato and Yuka Kiyama attended the Okayama Prefectural Citizen’s Honor Award and Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation Ceremony, held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office to report the results of their wheelchair track and field, from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

The Governor presented the Okayama Prefectural Citizen’s Honor Award to athlete Tomoki Sato, who achieved a silver medal in the male’s 400m T52 and 1500m T52 wheelchair track and field, and also presented the Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation to athlete Yuka Kiyama, who won fourth prize in the female’s 400m T52 and 100m T52 wheelchair track and field.

On September 28, a delegation from South Australia Willunga High School, with whom Okayama Shoka University High School has established a sister school agreement, paid a courtesy visit to Vice Governor Miyachi. The Delegation will stay for about one week in Okayama, promoting exchange with the students of Okayama Shoka University High School.

Vice Governor said that “I hope you will gain a deeper comprehension of the history and culture of Okayama and promote Okayama after your return to your home country and be active to further our relationship between Australia and Japan.”

On September 5, Five trainees from Brazil, China, Myanmar and Nepal came to Okayama as participants of the international contribution “Local to Local” technology transfer project (overseas technical trainee hosting project) run by the Prefectural government. Along with their host organizations, they paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Topics such as the outcomes of their three to four months of technical training and future aspirations, as well as impressions of Okayama were discussed. The governor offered encouragement, saying,

On August 9 and 10, Governor Ibaragi visited Taiwan and it’s supermarkets, the biggest export destination for Okayama, in order to strengthen sales and carry out promotions for export expansion in regards to prefectural agricultural products.

Okayama’s high quality fruits are very popular in Taiwan. The Governor engaged in promoting the charms of agricultural products through giving out food samples such as white peaches and grapes.

On August 8, a youth delegation comprising of 21 junior and senior high school students from South Gyeongsang Province, Korea with whom Okayama Prefectural Government has established a sister province/prefecture agreement, visited Okayama and paid a courtesy visit to Vice Governor Miyachi.

The Vice Governor gave them a hearty cheer saying, “To expose yourselves to other cultures and values at a young age is a precious experience for you in order to widen your international perspectives. I also wish for you to act as a bridgeof friendship between Okayama and Korea in the future.”

On August 4, Athletes Hitoshi Matsunaga, Yuka Kiyama and Tomoki Sato, who will represent Japan at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games as wheelchair track and field participants, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

On July 14, there was a commemorative event celebrating the new flight service between Okayama and Taipei held at Okayama Airport. The Tigerair Taiwan inaugural arrival flight was welcomed by an arching spray of water and the distribution of commemorative souvenirs to arrival guests as the tape cutting was held.

Governor Ibaragi said, “I would like to strive to promote the mutual use of this route, from Okayama to Taiwan and from Taiwan to Okayama, and I hope that it will continue to grow and expand”.

On July 8, Mr. Shinya Yajima, who was selected to be a Japanese soccer team member of Rio 2016 Olympic Games, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Mr. Yajima expressed his decision that “on behalf of Okayama, I would like to play with all of my strength.”  Governor Ibaragi encouraged, “I will be rooting for you from Okayama and we wish you a good performance in Rio.” He then presented him with a bouquet of flowers.

On June 28,a training delegation from the Wright State University and the University of Findlay from Ohio State, United States of America, paid a courtesy visit to Vice Governor Miyachi. The program promotes educational exchanges between the aforementioned universities and Kake Educational Institution. They will learn about Japanese life and culture during their stay in Japan for about three weeks.

Vice Governor Miyachi said, “I wish that you gain deep understanding of Okayama’s history and culture during your stay and share your experiences at Okayama with those back home.”

On May 15, after the G7 Kurashiki Education Ministers’ Meeting in Okayama, Ministerial colleagues from each country visited Okayama Korakuen Garden.

Education Ministers enjoyed a view of the Garden from Enyo-tei House in a guided tour by Governor Ibaragi. Also, they experienced Japan and Okayama Prefecture’s culture through watching Kyogen performance at the Noh stage and picking green tea leaves at a tea field in the Garden.

On April 30th, the Okayama Education Symposium, an official associated event of G7 Kurashiki Education Ministers’ Meeting in Okayama, was held at Kurashiki Ivy Square. 

During the first portion of this symposium, Ms. Makiko Nakamuro, Assistant Professor of Keio University made a keynote speech and Governor Ibaragi gave a presentation on the subject of “changing the world – raising global leaders from Okayama” 

In the second portion, a panel discussion was held and panelists including Ms. Nakamuro and Governor Ibaragi, eagerly discussed mattersregarding education for raising global leaders.

On April 14th, participants from the Hong Kong media interview tour which was conducted by Okayama Prefectural Government and Hong Kong Airlines, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi. 

This tour was conducted for the purpose of promoting utilization and increasing awareness in Hong Kong about the Okayama Hong Kong route. Participants were journalists from newspapers and magazines from Hong Kong, reported their impression of the interview tour to the Governor. 

In the future, the contents of this interview tour will be reported in various media in Hong Kong.

On April 2nd, an Opening event for “Destination Campaign: The Land of Sunshine Okayama” was held at the plaza in front of the Korakuen exit (east exit) at JR Okayama Station.

After greeting the group of around 800 tourists who travelled by Shinkansen and the many tourists at the station platform and the plaza, a Kusudama (a decorative ornamental ball) was broken as part of the welcoming ceremony.

The Governor said, “We will make efforts to welcome visitors and promote to them about Okayama’s unique charm.”

On March the 28th, there was a commemorative event celebrating the new flight service between Okayama and Hong Kong held at Okayama Airport. 

As the Hong Kong airlines aircraft landed, it was welcomed by an arch of water sprayed out by two airport fire trucks and a tape-cutting ceremony was also held.

Governor Ibaragi said, “I would like to strive to promote bidirectional use of this route and wish for it to continually grow and expand”.

On March 24th, the “Youth International Net Forum in Okayama” was held within Okayama city.

This forum is an official associated side event of G7 Kurashiki Education Ministers’ Meeting with the aim of exploring policies for youth to be better involved with the net society. About 200 junior and senior high school students participated in this event.

Following the opening address by Governor Ibaragi, there was a case study presentation from the Okayama Minami Senior High School Students, a speech by Associate Director Takeuchi of the University of Hyogo and a panel discussion consisting of international students from various countries.

On February the 10th, Governor Ibaragi paid a visit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in order to inform of Okayama’s preparations in regards to the G7 Kurashiki Education Ministers’ Meeting in Okayama held in May.

Governor Ibaragi met with Minister Hase to explain about the related events such as the Okayama Education Symposium hosted by Okayama Prefectural Government. The Governor hopes the meeting would be a good opportunity for prefectural citizens to be aware of the importance of education.

On February the 8th, Ms. Maria Teresa L. Taguiang, Consulate-General of the Republic of the Philippines in Osaka, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

She held various talks such as support measures for automobile industries implemented by the Philippine Government and about the Okayama International Business Association (OIBA) member’ visit to the Philippines from February 14.

The Governor stated, “As 2016 marks the 60th anniversary normalization of diplomatic ties between Japan and Philippines, I hope the bond between Japan and the Philippines will continue to prosper and become deeper.”

On February the 1st, Mr. Chen, President of Japan Branch of Hong Kong Airlines Limited and Governor Ibaragi held a Joint Press Conference and announced thatfor the first time in eight years, the Okayama-Hong Kong route will go back into service from March the 28th.

The Governor stated that “Hong Kong ranks as the top district for the number of foreigners staying within Okayama Prefecture. The established inbound route between the 2 cities has long been anticipated. I hope the flights between the 2 cities will continue to grow and would like to support it from here on out.”

On January 5, Ms. Yukari Miyake of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, who is referred to as the songstress of Maritime Self-Defense Force, was appointed “Land of Sunshine Okayama Ambassador.”

Ms. Miyake is a vocalist in the Maritime Self-Defense Force Band, and receives supportive appraisals for her versatile in singing any genre.

After receiving a certificate, Ms. Miyake expressed her enthusiasm for her role as an Ambassador. “I hope for many people to know Okayama’s charms. Monge (Okayama dialect for super) ganbarimasu (I will try my best as an Ambassador.)”

Avian Influenza Prevention Pact Tied with Truck Association       Posted on December 21, 2015

On December 21, Okayama Prefectural Government tied an agreement with Okayama Truck Association, with the terms of carrying out operations such as transportation of disease prevention materials in case of a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak.   

Other bases of support implemented through this agreement include securing necessary vehicles and dispatching experts of distribution. 

Okayama Prefecture Office will continue with the efforts of providing quick and appropriate response in an outbreak of avian influenza, to minimize the impact on the chicken industry and citizens of Okayama.

On December 7, the 12th Okayama Musashi Club Award and Special Award Ceremony, which presents awards to those who contributed to create Okayama’s charm, was held in Okayama City. 

The first Okayama Marathon held in November was elected for the grand prize and Mr. Okazaki, Chairman of Okayama Musashi Club, presented a plaque to Governor Ibaragi and Mayor Omori of Okayama City on behalf of the Okayama Marathon Executive Committee. 

Okayama Prefecture’s promotional catchphrase “Monge Okayama!” also received a Special Prize.

Okayama Musashi Club is an association comprised of branch chiefs and executives of enterprises local and outside of the prefecture.

On November 20, a special night-time lighting “Autumn Fantasy Garden” opened at Okayama Korakuen Garden, one of the three great gardens of Japan.

During the lighting ceremony attended by Vice Governor Ashiba, illuminations of the garden were lit up simultaneously as the rō nagashi, or floating lanterns, with the performance of the shinobue flute. The autumn garden was surrounded by fantasy lights.

 “Autumn Fantasy Garden” has been held until November 29.

On November 2, a welcome ceremony was held at Muscat Stadium for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles for their Autumn Training Camp. Governor Ibaragi made a welcome speech and presented the team with “Okayama Wagyu.”

 Many fans visited the baseball stadium to cheer for the new manager, Nashida, and the players.

This year is the fifth consecutive year that the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles had an autumn training camp at Muscat Stadium.

 On October 22, Governor Ibaragi, who will participate in the First Okayama Marathon Fun Run to be held on November 8, practiced running in public at the Okayama Prefectural Multipurpose Grounds to promote the Okayama Marathon.

Under the clear autumn sky, the Governor built up a sweat running the approximately 1km circuit through the Tsushima Yayoi Square and Forest of Sports Area three times.

For 5 days from October 7 to 11, Governor Ibaragi, together with a delegation comprised of such members as Prefectural Assembly Speaker Ono, visited Indonesia to research the business deployment of enterprises operating overseas and carried out PR for prefectural agricultural products.

In addition to inspecting enterprises operating overseas and exchanging opinions, the Governor also visited Mr. Franky Sibarani, Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board, to request support for enterprises expanding from Okayama Prefecture.

He also engaged in PR for Okayama prefectural grapes by providing samples at an expensive Indonesian supermarket, and carried out an exchange of opinions with logistics representatives in order to try to establish the export of prefectural agricultural products to Indonesia.

  30 Sept., Five trainees from Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, China, and Myanmar in Okayama as participants of the international contribution “Local to Local” technology transfer project (overseas technical trainee hosting project) run by the Prefectural government, along with their host organisations, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.
  Topics such as the outcomes of the two to four months of technical training and future aspirations, as well as impressions of Okayama and favourite Japanese cuisine were discussed. The governor offered encouragement, saying “I look forward to all of you contributing to the development of your home countries using the techniques and knowledge you have acquired, while also becoming bridges of friendship between your home countries and Okayama Prefecture”.

   September 18, His Excellency Mr. Sergei Rakhmanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to Vice Governor Miyachi. The Ambassador provided an introduction of such aspects of the Republic of Belarus as its advanced industry, flourishing sports, and famous tourist spots. Aspects that Belarus shares with Okayama Prefecture, such as the beautiful nature and lack of natural disasters, were also discussed.
  Touching on the establishment of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Belarus in Okayama in July, the Vice Governor said “I look forward to exchange between Okayama and the Belarus becoming more and more prosperous into the future”.

 13 August, Governor Ibaragi visited the venue of Hong Kong’s largest scale food trade show, “Food Expo 2015”, in order to carry out PR aimed at strengthening the sales and expanding the exports of prefecturally produced agricultural produce.
 While providing tasting samples to attendees, the governor carried out PR for Okayama Prefecture white peaches, and also visited and offered words of encouragement at the booths run by Okayama based business operators.
 Additionally, an exchange of opinions regarding the market growth of in such areas as prefecturally produced farm produce was also conducted with Ms. Clare Wong, Assistant Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the sponsor of the event.

Okayama Korakuen Garden “Garden of Dreams” Light Up Ceremony held Posted: 1 August 2015

1 August, The seasonal symbol of summer in Okayama, the “Garden of Dreams”, a special period of late night opening of Okayama Korakuen Garden, was opened.
Governor Ibaragi, together with approximately 200 visitors to the garden, took part in a light balloon parade that added colour to the lighting ceremony. A light up count down was then performed, with all of the garden illuminations coming alight simultaneously.
This year marks the 16th “Garden of Dreams”, with an abundance of new events planned to be held until August 31.

National Governors’ Association in Okayama held    Posted on 2015 7 28

For two days from 28 July, the 35th session of the National Governors’ Association Meeting, which is held in rural cities, was held in Okayama City, and saw vigorous discussions conducted on regional revitalization, measures for addressing declining births, and securing local tax revenue sources.

The “Regional Revitalization Declaration” was adopted with regards to regional revitalization, the main theme of this meeting.

Governor Ibaragi, as governor of the host prefecture, welcomed governors from nationwide and guided them on a tour of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter and Okayama Korakuen Garden, and prepared for them regional specialty products such as white peaches, andpione and muscat grapes.

For 6 days from July 14 to 19, Governor Ibaragi visited Vietnam and Thailand to engage in opinion exchange with Okayama Prefecture affiliated businesses, and tourism promotion. In Vietnam, he visited Mr. Nguyen Noi, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Planning and Investment Foreign Investment Agency, a government agency responsible for improving the investment environment, and asked for overseas business support for advances from Okayama based businesses.

In Thailand, in cooperation with five prefectures of the Chugoku region, Okayama’s charm points were advertised through a tourism promotion meeting for increasing tourists to Okayama, and other PR events.

On July 10, Okayama Yunogo Belles’ Miho Fukumoto and Aya Miyama, who participated in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada as members of Japan’s national women’s soccer team, visited Okayama Prefectural Government Office to report the results of the World Cup and attend the Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation Ceremony.

Both players said “While we did not achieve our goal of winning the World Cup, we played with all of our strength. From here on we will be playing our hardest as members of Okayama Yunogo Belle, and we ask for your continued support”.

Governor Ibaragi said, “Prefectural citizens were greatly encouraged by your team work against the opponent players, who have more physical strength than you, and in the face of pressure as previous champions”. He then presented them with Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendations and praised their play.

On June 29, Governor Ibaragi visited Mr. Hiroshi Nakashima, Chairman of Okayama Economic Coordination Council, to request cooperation to expand implementation of the “Ikuboss Declaration” to the member companies in Okayama Prefecture.

“Ikuboss” pertains to supervisors who strive to provide a work environment that is easy for their subordinates to balance work and childcare. As part of this measure, Ikuboss would encourage his or her subordinates to take childcare leave. Governor Ibaragi is an advocate and made the Declaration himself.

On June 15, Daigo and Nobu of manzai comedy duo “Chidori” paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi to promote “Yoshimoto Great Exhibition Sports Festival in Muscat Stadium,” an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of Kurashiki Sports Park, which will be held in October.

Chidori has also been promoting Okayama after being appointed as the “Land of Sunshine Okayama Ambassador” in February of this year.

On May 29, Governor Ibaragi announced to implement a tie-in promotional activity for Disney’s new movie, Tomorrowland, and the Okayama Prefecture.

Actress Mirai Shida, who dubbed in the Japanese version, visited the Prefectural Government to promote the movie by sharing its highlights, and posing with the movie’s symbolic T emblem pin.

Okayama Prefecture Governor Mr. Ibaragi expressed his determination and announced that a summit will be held in Okayama on May 23, 2015 as a first step of the project.

 30 March, The members of the Meisei Gakuin Senior High School Japanese Calligraphy Club, who, as well as achieving excellent individual and group results in a number of national events, received the Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition Grand Prize (individual; first place) at the “19th All Japan High School and University Student Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition (sponsored by the Japan Calligraphic Art Society)” held in July last year, paid Governor Ibaragi a courtesy visit.
 The Governor provided encouragement, saying “I feel that there are many things that can be learned in the process of mastering this path, which also prove to be some of life’s treasures. Please continue to do your best”.

16 March, Okayama Prefectural Government entered into a comprehensive collaboration agreement with Poplar Co., Ltd. to improve the level of service provided to prefectural citizens and promote regional revitalization..

20 Feb., The ceremony for the 2014 Okayama Prefecture Top Athlete Award was held at Okayama Prefectural Government Office.

61 individuals and 12 groups were commended with the Okayama Top Athlete Award.

One individual was commended with the Okayama Prefecture Sports Masters Award.

Four individuals and one group were commended with entry into the Okayama Prefecture Honorary Sports Hall of Fame.

Governor Ibaragi presented awardees with certificates of commendation and mounted medallions.

Mr. Brian Ken Watase, President of HJJCC, presented a message from Governor of the State of Hawaii to Governor Ibaragi and the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen and Princesses spoke of such things as their impressions of Okayama.

28 September, “Tottori Okayama Shimbashi-kan” which was established by both Okayama prefecture and Tottori Prefecture, was opened in front of Shimbashi Station in Tokyo.

In the future, Okayama Prefecture, in cooperation with Tottori Prefecture, aims to raise Okayama’s profile, develop sales for prefectural products, and improve its brand power, by utilizing the functions of this joint shop.

7 August, a youth delegation comprised of 23 junior and senior high school students (including 6 junior high school students, 13 senior high school students and 4 escort staff) from South Gyeongsang Province, Korea, with which Okayama Prefecture has established a sister province/prefecture agreement, visited Okayama and paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.

Governor Ibaragi spoke of the importance of travelling overseas and experiencing other cultures at a young age based on his own experiences studying abroad, and expressed his wish that they would act as bridges of friendship between Japan and Korea in the future.

From 27 July to 1 August, Governor Ibaragi, together with prefectural enterprises, visited Silicon Valley in order to support vehicle manufacture-related companies in Okayama Prefecture which have been engaged in next generation technology development.

In addition to inspecting advanced products and technologies, the Governor also encouraged exchange with local enterprises and researchers in Silicon Valley.

 7 July, Ms. Melody, a member of JKT 48, a sister group of AKB48, was appointed the position of “Okayama Fruit Ambassador “.

JKT 48 is an idol group which is active in Jakarta, and Ms. Melody was selected as number one among the JKT 48 members in the JKT 48 general election.

She said, “I would like to endeavor to carry out PR on Okayama Fruit.”

Ms. Kanemoto is a remarkable voice actress who provides the voice of popular animation characters. She said “I would like to support my beloved Okayama as a voice actress.”

26 May, Mayor Kodre Chanchala Sandip of Pune Municipal Corporation, India, with which Okayama Prefecture maintains a Memorandum of Understanding, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi and carried out an exchange of opinions.

Governor Ibaragi carried out PR for Okayama and reflected on previous interactions. Mayor Kodre mentioned the Pune Okayama Friendship Gardenas symbolising cultural ties and such common ground like as advanced technology.

The will to further deepen mutual understanding and a relationship based on trust was affirmed.

岡山県出身の画家、赤木曠児郎(あかぎこうじろう)氏の絵画贈呈式

26 May, Mr. Kojiro Akagi (pictured far left), a painter from Okayama Prefecture who is based in Paris, France, donated his painting, “Domesdes Invalides 2”.

The donation was made in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Mr. Akagi’s move to France, with the artist saying “I want the people of my hometown Okayama to see my works”.  The painting is being displayed in front of the Secretariat Division on the 3rd floor of Okayama Prefectural Government Building.

 24 Apr., Daisuke Takahashi (Kansai University Graduate School), who achieved sixth place in the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi (7 to 23 February, 2014), was presented with an Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation. Governor Ibaragi presented a certificate of commendation and a commemorative gift, saying “Congratulations on your third consecutive Olympic placement”.
 Daisuke Takahashi gave an address, saying “With this commendation as incentive, I hope to take on various challenges.  I ask that you continue to cheer me on”.

 10 Apr., An Okayama Prefectural Sports Special Commendation Ceremony was held for Yoshihiro Nitta, who achieved fourth place for Cross-Country Skiing in the 20km Classic, Standing, at the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympics.  The Governor praised Mr. Nitta, who provided prefectural citizens with great thrills and hope, and presented him with a certificate of commendation and commemorative gift.

 17 Mar., Students of the Harvard School of Public Health, together with Mr. Suganami, a representative of the intermediate group AMDA, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Prefectural Government Building.

 The Harvard School of Public Health Student Club of Japan has come to Japan as a part of the Japan Trip implemented since 2006 for the purpose of local inspection.  This is the first such trip to Okayama.  The Governor spoke with the students regarding approaches to issues of declining birth rate and aging population in Okayama Prefecture, while also encouraging them in their future endeavours.

   17 Mar., A departure ceremony for the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer from Okayama Prefecture was held at the Prefectural Government Building.
 Director General Yamada of the Department of Citizens Services expressed confidence in the upcoming endeavours of volunteer Yui Hosokawa, providing words of encouragement while also delegating to her the role of acting as a bridge between prefectural citizens and the local population as an “Okayama International Cooperation Ambassador”. Ms. Hosokawa will be dispatched to Ecuador for two years where she will carry out classes in drawing and art at local junior and senior high schools.

 14 Feb., Director Takashi Shimizu and lead actress Fuka Koshiba of the film “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, in the run up to the film’s 1 March national release, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Prefectural Government Office.
 The film features the beautiful Setouchi island scenery, with parts shot on location at Saidaiji Gofuku Doori, Higashi-ku, Okayama-shi, and at Ushimado, Setouchi-shi, from 16 to 25 June. The governor offered his impressions, saying “The view of the Seto Inland Sea spreading out from Ushimado is depicted beautifully, and I felt a new charm of Okayama”.

 13 Feb.,H.E. Mr. Thanatip Upatising, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Japan paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.  The Governor spoke of his experiences when he visited Thailand in October of last year, applauding the Thai people’s congeniality and kindness as something he hoped could be learned from in Okayama Prefecture.
  In response to this, Ambassador Thanatip stated the number of Thai tourists to Japan was increasing, that 2015 would see the economic integration of the ASEAN region, and that he would proactively support investment in Thailand from Okayama Prefecture.
  In conclusion, gifts were exchanged, and the will to further deepen a friendly relationship with Thailand which has continued since 600 years ago was affirmed.

 23 Jan., Young Africans (21 individuals from 8 countries) visiting Okayama Prefecture for vocational training and education as a part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) run “Youth Training Project”, paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Prefectural Department of Citizens Services at the Prefectural Government Office.
 The Director General of the Prefectural Department of Citizens Services offered words of welcome, saying “I hope that you will all be able to obtain specialist knowledge during this training program, while enjoying everything good that Okayama Prefecture has to offer”.  Following the courtesy visit, the group received training in the Prefecture’s vocational training system.

  23 Jan., A departure ceremony for the “Ride! Sunshine Man Across Japan Okayama PR” project was held at the Prefectural Government Office, where the Governor presented the two “Sunshine Men” with certificates, “Sunshine Man” badges, and saw them off with words of encouragement and a handshake.  This project is aimed at increasing the Prefecture’s visibility, and is one of the projects planned by the “Sunshine Men/Sunshine Ladies”, staff employed for the purpose of carrying out nationwide PR with the impact of “The Land of Sunshine Okayama”.  “Sunshine Man” Mr. Ambe will travel around Japan on his bicycle, while appearing on local radio stations in each region to carry out passionate PR on this Prefecture’s charm, while Mr. Sawa will accompany him, videoing his travels for the rest of the country to see.

  20 Dec., Mr. Jung-Ho Choi, Regional Director and Managing Vice President of Korean Air Japan, visited Governor Ibaragi at the Prefectural Government Office and announced that as of 8 Feb. next year (2014) the four return flights a week on the Okayama Seoul route would be increased to 7.  This will mean a return for the first time in three months to daily operated flights.
 Regional Director Jung-Ho said “We would like to aim for even further development of Okayama routes”, to which Governor Ibaragi responded “We would like to cooperate to ensure that as many people as possible utilise the service”.

  6 Dec., The six “Sunshine Men/Sunshine Ladies”, staff hired to carry out PR for Okayama Prefecture throughout the country, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Prefectural Government Office.
 The “Sunshine Men/Sunshine Ladies” began by giving self-introductions and talking of their aspirations.  Miss Yuki Gouda, one of the “Sunshine Ladies”, demonstrated her special talent by singing the prefectural song “Minna no Kokoro ni” (To Everyone’s Heart), and expressed her enthusiasm at the task set before her.
 In response, Governor Ibaragi offered words of encouragement, saying “You all have unique personal histories, and this fills me with confidence.  Please make use of your special talents in communicating the Okayama’s charm”.
 The six staff will communicate Okayama’s charm to other prefectures through PR activities which make use of such techniques as video productions and performances.

 Nov. 28, His Excellency Yonghua Cheng, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Japan, along with the ambassador’s wife, Mrs. Wan Wang, and Mr. Yiren Liu, the Osaka Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi and the Speaker of the Okayama Prefectural Assembly, Mr. Watanabe.
Governor Ibaragi said “Exchange at the regional level is important, and I hope that through this exchange relations between both countries can be improved”, while Prefectural Assembly Speaker Mr. Watanabe stated “As neighbouring countries, Japan and China boast a variety of connections. With the future generations of our children and grandchildren in mind, I hope that we can move forward with an amiable relationship”.
 In response to this, Ambassador Cheng touched upon the words of such pioneers with whom he has had personal contact with as the late Mr. Kaheita Okazaki of Okayama Prefecture, who contributed great effort to the friendship between Japan and China.  The Ambassador said “Currently, relations between our countries are difficult, and this requires that both sides contribute their wisdom, and that we move forward while looking at the big picture”.

From October 27 to October 30, a delegation comprised of such members as the Governor and the Prefectural Assembly Speaker, together with a group of approximately 50 private organisations, including lodging facilities and travel companies, from the Chugoku region visited Thailand and carried out a tourism promotion event targeting local travel companies and media.
 In addition to this, the delegation also participated in an opinion exchange with Okayama Prefecture affiliated businesses, including Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, and the Thailand Board of Investment, and efforts were made to carry out PR for each field of industry in Okayama Prefecture, including the holding of a seminar aimed at increasing usage of the Port of Mizushima.

12 Sep., The Satosho Red Snakes, who resoundingly won the 23rd All Japan Dodgeball Championship held in Tokyo in August, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Okayama Prefectural Government Building.
 Receiving the report of the first such victory by a prefectural team, the Governor gave his blessing, saying “My heartiest congratulations on securing the national championship. I ask that you use this wonderful experience of victory to fuel your dedication from here on” and presented commemorative gifts.

 The Governor gave his blessing, saying “The things which you have learned through debate and through working together with your peers will serve you all in your life to come.  Please try your hardest”, and presented them with commemorative gifts.

19 Aug., The members of the Soshi Gakuen High School’s Girls’ Softball club, who secured their first championship win at the 2013 National Inter-High School Softball Competition and 65th All Japan High School Girls Softball Championship, held from 31July to 3 August in Fukuoka City, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Prefectural Government Office.
 The Governor gave his blessing, saying “Please turn your commitment to Softball into an asset and continue to give it your all”, and presented the members with a commemorative gift.  Representing the athletes, captain Shiori Okano gave words of thanks, and expressed their resolve towards retaining the championship in response to the Governor’s comments.

 2 Aug., The “Breakfast Everyday Campaign” was held in Okayama City in order to make a large number of children aware of the importance of eating breakfast every day.
 About 40 people, including 5th and 6th grade primary school students from Soja City and members of the Nutrition Committee, participated in a cooking class which focused on making a nutritionally balanced easy to make breakfast menu. After making rice balls with Governor Ibaragi, the primary school students sampled the menu they had prepared, and made such comments as “I want to make this for my family” and “I want to be more conscious about having well balanced meals”.

2 Jul., A result presentation for the “Okayama Next Generation Vehicle Technology Research and Development Project” which has been underway since 2011, was held at Techno Support Okayama.

The presentation was held so as to follow the newly developed prototype Electric Vehicle’s (EV) receipt of number plates in mid-June.  The prototype EV is equipped with a wide array of new technologies and products, such as its wheel hub motors.  Governor Ibaragi, who was in attendance, took part in a test drive, allowing him to directly experience the advanced technical strength of the prefectural enterprises which contributed to the development of the vehicle’s installed components.  The Governor gave his impression, saying “acceleration is smooth and strong, and even with an increase in speed I could still feel driving stability”.

   26 Jun., A departure meeting for Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers from Okayama Prefecture was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office.      

 Anticipating their success overseas, Governor Ibaragi offered words of encouragement, while entrusting them with the role of serving as bridges between prefectural citizens and the people of their assigned countries as “Okayama International Cooperation Ambassadors”, and presenting them with letters of appointment to that effect. The eight volunteers will be dispatched to developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and will spend the next two years contributing to development in their respective countries while working in such fields as medical care and education.

 25 Jun., A training delegation comprised of 28 students and staff from educational institutions carrying out educational exchange with the Kake Educational Institution, including the Wright State University and University of Findlay of the State of Ohio, United States of America; the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana and the Federal University of Parana of the State of Parana,  Federative Republic of Brazil, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi at the Okayama Prefectural Government Building.
 Governor Ibaragi used a mixture of English while speaking of the importance of travelling overseas and experiencing other cultures at a young age based on his own experiences studying abroad, and expressed his wish that they would be able to carry out meaningful training during their stay.

   14 May, Four returned Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Senior Volunteers from Okayama Prefecture reported their valuable experiences in their dispatch countries to Governor Ibaragi at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office.
The returned volunteers advised the governor of the widely varying local conditions of climate and environment and their impressions during their stay.  The Governor praised the returned volunteers while expressing his hope that they all use the things they learned in their dispatch countries in their local communities.

5 May, The “Mimasaka Province Founding 1300 Year Anniversary Project – Curtain Raising Ceremony” was held at the Tsuyama Cultural Centre. Honorary Chairman of the Executive Committee, Governor Ibaragi gave an address, saying “Ensuring that the regional stimulation achieved through commemorative projects is not transient, but leads on to regional development is extremely important.  I will endeavour with you all to further rejuvenate the Mimasaka region by the next 100 year celebration”.  Afterwards, the ceremony was enlivened by a diverse programme, which included the performance of a commemorative musical by local residents, “Mimasaka’s Overthrowing the Monkey God”.

30 Apr., Consul General of the United States in Osaka/Kobe Patrick Joseph Linehan paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.  Along with thanking the Consul General for giving lectures in the Prefecture and donating English publications to the Prefectural Library, Governor Ibaragi also spoke with him about their shared experiences of overseas study and exchanged opinions regarding such issues as the importance of studying overseas when young.

10 Apr., A ceremony was held to commemorate the 25 year anniversary of the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge.  The  attendees of “The 25 Year Commemorative Ceremony of the Opening of the Seto Ohashi Line”, which was held at JR Kojima Station, included Governor Ibaragi, Kagawa Prefectural Governor Hamada, Okayama Prefectural Assembly Speaker Uchiyama, Kagawa Prefectural Assembly Speaker Hiraki.  The 25 year anniversary was celebrated with a tape-cutting ceremony.  Afterwards, the attendees boarded the commemorative Anpanman Torokko train cars together with local pre-schoolers, travelled across the Seto Inland Sea to the Seto Ohashi Commemorative Park in Bannosu, Sakaideshi, and carried out a commemorative planting of trees.

Mar. 31, A commemorative ceremony was held at Okayama Airport to celebrate the opening of AIRDO’s new Okayama-Sapporo route.  In his address, Governor Ibaragi stated “I am extremely pleased to see my earnest wish for the operation of a year-round service realised, as well as the implementation of a timetable easy to utilise from Okayama.  I will endeavour in the promotion of the route, in order to ensure that as many prefectural citizens as possible visit charming Hokkaido”.  The new service was celebrated with tape cutting by such concerned parties as Norihiro Fukunaga, the Vice President of AIRDO Co. Ltd.

   22 Feb., The ceremony to present The Okayama Prefecture Top Athlete Award, an award which recognises outstanding achievements in international competitions and Japan athletic championships, as well commending athletes and trainers who have raised awareness of prefectural sports, was held at the Okayama Prefectural Government Office.  The awardees were presented certificates of commendation and mounted medallions by Governor Ibaragi.
   Additionally, the presentation ceremony for the Okayama Prefecture Sports Masters Award and the Okayama Prefecture Honorary Sports Hall of Fame was also carried out.

  13 Feb., the “Second Kirari Kagayaku Okayama Kouriten Award Ceremony” was held at the Prefectural Government Office.
 Governor Ibaragi presented certificates of commendation and commemorative gifts along with words of congratulation, saying “all of the awardees have accurately grasped consumer needs and local issues, resulting in mobile retail in the semi-mountainous regions and the development of products using local resources, or have made contributions to the local community through such long term endeavours as the proactive participation in local development projects.  I would like to pay my respects to your all of your efforts up until now”.

  Furthermore, following the ceremony the Governor talked passionately with the awardees while inspecting an exhibition panel outlining their endeavours, and some of their products.

  28 Jan., Governor Hong Joon Pyo of Gyeongsangnam Province, Korea with which Okayama Prefecture has established a sister province/prefecture agreement, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ibaragi.  The two carried out an exchange of opinions regarding future exchange between Okayama Prefecture and Gyeongsangnam Province in various areas.
    Governor Hong Joon Pyo expressed his hopes that, for the purpose of promoting tourism and trade, exchange between the two regions could be further invigorated.  In response to this, Governor Ibaragi stated that, based on the success of the four years of exchange, he hoped to undertake further development of prefecture/province exchange.

 24 Jan., Governor Ibaragi visited President Matsumoto of NHK for the purpose of putting forward a proposal for the production of an NHK period drama based on Houkoku Yamada who is renowned for achieving reform in the Bicchu Matsuyama Domain.
 The Governor made a strong case for introducing Houkoku Yamada to the modern era, saying “[his] reform ideals and way of life are exactly what are needed to increase the chance of a rebirth of Japan”

Paid a visit to the Governor, and plans to add new flights to the Okayama-Sapporo Route as of 31 March 2013 were announced.  This will be the company’s first service to Western Japan, and will be the first reinstitution of year round flight operation to Sapporo in 4 years, and plans are in place to operate services at times convenient for those using them from Okayama.

 Materials such as Introductory pamphlets advertising next year’s “1300 Year Anniversary of the Founding of Mimasaka Province” were handed out to tourists from all over the country in the Tokyo Sky Tree 5th Floor Tourism PR Corner from the 3rd to the 9th of December.
“Katami-kun”, the Mimasaka Province mascot Character, was also in attendance at the PR Corner, and a large number of people stopped to view the exhibit and listen to an introduction of Mimasaka Province.
 The opportunity to carry out these PR activities was in part due to fact that a replica of the Tsuyama City Museum owned “Edo Hitome Zu Byobu” (a folding screen depicted the Edo landscape) is currently on display on the Tokyo Sky Tree Observation Deck.

 Nov. 20, “Okayama Tourism Presentation 2012 – 1300 Year Anniversary of the Founding of Mimasaka Province” was held in Osaka City for Kansai region travel companies and press representatives. Along with carrying out PR for the Mimasaka Province 1300 Year Anniversary events and requesting cooperation regarding tourism to Okayama Prefecture, Governor Ibaragi also provided encouragement to the exhibitors dispatched from Okayama Prefecture who were present.

 Nov. 20, Governor Ibaragi, in moving towards “education revitalization”, an issue which he has upheld as vital, visited a junior high school for the purpose of further understanding the current state of affairs in school education. At Hayashima Junior High School, the school visited on this day, Governor Ibaragi observed the integrated study period, health and physical education, and science classes, took a tour of the school, talked with the school administration, followed by a discussion with students while taking school provided lunch with them.
